JOB SUMMARY
The Senior Google Workspace Administrator is an advanced IT professional applying knowledge of the Google Workspace and Google storage management strategies to support 20,000+ users on the UCSC campus. They will be responsible for the administration, configuration, and management of our organization's Google Workspace environment, ensuring that it meets the needs of our users and supports our business operations.
APPOINTMENT INFORMATION
Budgeted Salary: $100,000 - $114,250/year. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

JOB DUTIES
25% - Administration
- Acts as technical lead to administer, configure, and manage modifications, updates, and compliance for the campus's Google Workspace environment, including Gmail, Drive, Calendar, and other apps.
- Monitors and manages Google Workspace usage, ensuring storage limit compliance and optimal performance.
- Develops, applies, and manages highly complex security configurations.
- Manages user accounts, groups, and access permissions in Google Workspace, ensuring appropriate access levels are assigned to users. Analyzes and modifies processes for systems access to comply with campus security standards.
- Develops and documents standard policies, processes, and procedures for use of Google Cloud Storage. Performs highly complex analysis of user needs considering students, staff, faculty, and research applications.
25% - Technology and Process Improvement
- Develops and implements technologies, policies, procedures, and best practices to improve and expand service levels, and ensures compliance with relevant requirements, regulations and standards.
- Uses scripting and other tools to automate administrative processes and integrate Google Workspace with other systems and applications.
- Performs complex and advanced analysis to acquire, install, modify, and support additional software applications or tools.
25% - Technical Support
- Provides tier 3 expert technical support and troubleshooting, resolving highly complex issues promptly and effectively.
- Supports, mentors and provides backup to Tier 2 support providers, if necessary, and providing overall leadership in structuring the Google Workspace support ecosystem.
15% - Research and Analysis
- Plans and directs key activities in the release of the latest Google Workspace features and updates, evaluating their potential impact on our organization and recommending appropriate changes.
5% - User training and resources
- May help develop and deliver training programs and resources to promote the effective use of Google Workspace within our organization.
5% - Other Administrative Responsibilities
- May oversee processes and develop standards for the administration and support of software and applications compatible with Google Workspace.
- May lead a team of IT professionals. Collaborates with key IT staff including systems administrators, engineers, and programmers supporting GoogleWorkplace network infrastructure.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
- Experience administering Google Workspace for a large enterprise, experience with storage management strategies, federated authentication via external SAML-based identity providers, syncing Google and IdP user accounts, group management, Google Apps Manager (GAM), Google Cloud Directory Sync (GCDS), LDAP, Google and third-party security investigation tools, monitoring and reporting tools, organizational unit (OU) strategy, workspace license management, data migration, log analysis, Google Vault, and data preservation.
- Advanced knowledge of enterprise email systems and SMTP servers and clients with experience supporting and troubleshooting Google SMTP services, SPF/DKIM/DMARC, encryption, mail routing, Anti-Spam/Virus, and delivery issues.
- Understanding of security principles and best practices, including experience with data loss prevention, eDiscovery, and knowledge of basic networking concepts including, but not limited to, advanced understanding of DNS and familiarity with network topologies, firewalls, and proxies.
- Demonstrated experience in scripting and automating administrative tasks using the Google Workspace API and command-line tools, with a preference for Python, JavaScript, or similar languages.
- Advanced knowledge of cloud computing services, including storage and security.
- Ability to take on a leadership role, comfortable taking accountability for operational decisions, while also exercising professional judgment in escalating issues where appropriate. Demonstrated productivity in a fully remote environment.
- Ability to work independently on complex technical projects as well as on a team of technical professionals and departmental decision makers. Demonstrated productivity in a fully remote environment.
- Strong commitment and positive approach to team collaboration including collaboration with other IT teams, business units, internal and external subject matter experts, and within professional communities. Experience providing training, mentorship, and support to junior administrators and user support staff.

- Ability and willingness to continuously learn and adapt to new technologies and tools, including staying up-to-date with the latest changes in Google Workspace policies and features.
- Excellent written communication skills with the ability to adjust communication styles to a variety of different audiences including non-technical clients and campus leadership.

- Experience providing administration and support for other SaaS applications.

- Professional Google Workspace Administrator Certification.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
