The Program in Children’s Regenerative Medicine in the Department of Pediatric Surgery at The University of Texas Medical School at Houston is seeking full time Senior Research Associate to support the Program and Center for Translational Injury Research, as well as ongoing clinical trials and research projects. This work will develop assays and protocols that will support research designed to treat critical injuries and illness in children and adult patients to advance healthcare. We are seeking Senior Research Associates that specialize in TBI related research on full time basis with availability on some nights and weekends for additional compensation. The candidate will be responsible for performing all aspects of testing from specimen receipt to reporting of final results according to trial-specific protocols and regulatory requirements. The successful candidates will work with and under the supervision of the Facility Director and collaboratively with multidisciplinary investigators on translational research projects related to cell therapy and regenerative medicine. Knowledge and expertise in controlled cortical impact brain injury, immunology, cell therapies, and advanced flow cytometry techniques is preferred. The selected candidate will be responsible for performing a variety of specialized and time-sensitive assays and biologic manufacturing processes.
- Existing knowledge of BD and Beckman-Coulter cytometers and specific familiarity with the LSR II and Galios cytometers is an advantage.
- Use of the Leica pneumatic CCI impactor
- Knowledge of blood-brain barrier assays
- Follows the laboratory’s SOPs for handling and processing, analyzing, reviewing and reporting data and maintaining records of patient test results. Maintains accurate and timely research records to include notebooks, records, databases, etc.
- Experience with aseptic cell culture techniques is preferred.
- Knowledge and experience in common research techniques, such as IHC, qPCR, ELISA, etc.
- Performs all aspects of immunophenotyping, including reagent stock and working solution preparation, sample preparation, staining, acquisition, data analysis, and inventory management.
- Existing knowledge of BD and Beckman-Coulter cytometers and specific familiarity with the LSR II and Galios cytometers is an advantage.

- Follows the laboratory’s SOPs for handling and processing, analyzing, reviewing and reporting data and maintaining records of patient test results. Maintains accurate and timely research records to include notebooks, records, databases, etc.

- Assists with the development, optimization, and validation of new assays, procedures and SOPs according to regulatory requirements.
- Adheres to established turn-around-times while maintaining highest quality of test results and the most efficient use of resources. Able to execute time-sensitive assays within limited windows to support clinical applications. Works under pressure.
- Works well with diverse and multidisciplinary teams and collaborators in various research activities that may include traditional laboratory experiments and activities, informatics, and/or animal laboratories. Makes independent decisions as required, which may impact research team or assigned project
- Monitors and maintains clean laboratory equipment and work area. Participates in continuing education programs, seminars, and workshops. May provided guidance and training of laboratory technicians, support staff and other assistants to ensure efficient, timely and high quality results. Expected to contribute to research publications, presentations, and funding applications.
- Complies with all governmental and University policies, rules, regulation and codes.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
The Program has over 6,000 square feet of state of the art, fully equipped basic laboratory and tissue engineering facilities as well as 4,000 square feet of cGMP laboratories for production of clinical grade, cell and tissue engineered products.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's Degree or higher
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience in work using flow cytometry
- Experience in aseptic cell culture techniques
- Willingness to work flexible and extended hours as necessary with compensation available.
- Personal responsibility and ability to work independently without supervision
- Ability to work in teams with good interpersonal skills
- Impeccable record keeping skills, compatible with regulatory requirements.
MINIMUM EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree in related field with four (4) years of related research experience including significant experience in a project management research role; or Master's degree in related field with two (2) years of related research experience including significant experience in a project management research role; or Doctorate degree. MINIMUM EXPERIENCE: Years of experience varies based on education level
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount constantly to move objects. This position may include work involving potentially hazardous chemical, biological or radioactive agents.
