Examples of Work

The Park Superintendent II will carry out a management program for Swanson State Recreation Area which includes provisions for administrative support, interpretation and visitor services, maintenance, cultural and natural resource management and visitor protection.

The incumbent will supervise and carry out various park operating tasks involved in campground and day-use area, operation and maintenance, to include the following: Division and area promotion; traffic control; area patrol and foster compliance of park rules and regulations; fire suppression; equipment, grounds and facility maintenance and repair; and, the operation of machinery, equipment and tools in performance of duties. The incumbent will also hire, train and supervise a seasonal workforce, insuring equal opportunity for all employees supervised; will coordinate park safety programs; preparation of budget requests for park expenditures and the purchase of supplies and equipment; maintain records and prepare appropriate reports; collect fees, accounting for and depositing same. Some travel.

Qualifications / Requirements

REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor’s degree in park/recreation management or a related field; (wildlife, fisheries, natural resources sciences, public administration, history, cultural resource preservation or interpretation, travel and tourism, and planning) AND two years related experience including one year in a supervisory or lead worker capacity. Related coursework/training and/or experience in park/recreation management or related field may substitute for the Bachelor’s degree on a year-for-year basis.

OTHER: Valid driver's license or able to provide independent authorized transportation.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of park administration and of the operation and maintenance of park facilities, equipment and grounds and, departmental rules and regulations. Ability to plan, manage and evaluate park programs, including interpretation and visitor services.

Ability to communicate effectively and establish and maintain community and public relations with business, special interest groups, and state, local and federal agencies. Ability to assign and supervise the work of employees; enforce park rules and regulations; maintain records and prepare reports.
