Summary/Purpose
This engineering position will support the new product development and implementation of electro-mechanical systems.
Essential Duties and Accountabilities:
Strategy and Growth
- Actively monitor and provide insight into technology, industrial, and regulatory trends affecting product roadmaps.
- Perform and support appropriate studies to execute business strategies and future project viability.
- Collaborate with educational institutions, professional organizations, and partners to expand JTEKT’s corporate influence.
- Take a lead role in responding to new business inquiries by generating competitive technical and business cases.
- Create, review, and release internal and external product specifications, schedules, and related materials to ensure the creation of designs which exceed customer expectations.
- Oversee the development of CAD data, associated technical drawings, bill of materials, and generate documentation such as DVP&Rs, DFMEAs, and DRBFMs.
- Support prototype operations during component acquisition, sample build, and initial evaluations to guarantee design operates as expected and to help countermeasure any discrepancies.
- Analyze product data, specifications, evaluations, and validation results as required to provide guidance for success.
- Ensure all engineering activities follow the agreed upon timeline.
- Take lead role in managing special projects
- Participate in technical activities associated with part design and development; aid in systematic problem solving; communicate and/or collaborate with JTEKT Japan, JTEKT Europe, Suppliers, and/or Customers as necessary.
- Strive to continuously improve the execution of the aforementioned responsibilities as a broader commitment to personal and team development and growth.
- Routine interaction with automotive manufacturers, customers, and suppliers; including international and service entities.
- Helps lead JTEKT’s internal AQG Process (Advanced Quality Gate).
- Ensure thorough communications to all team members, associated departments, and management regularly.
- Take a lead role in benchmarking activities, product improvement initiatives (i.e. VE/VA), and budget management.
- Provide product technical support to JTEKT cross functional teams (Quality, Manufacturing, Purchasing, Sales, etc.).
- This position has no formal supervisory responsibilities.
- Will direct and monitor cross functional team members to ensure project success.
- Will provide technical guidance and mentoring to junior team members.
- May require mentoring or oversite of Interns and/or Cooperative Students.
- Good planning and organizational skills.
- Ability to work in a team-oriented environment utilizing effective interpersonal skills.
- Good analytical and problem-solving skills where problems are unusual or difficult and excellent mathematical skills or ability to develop in-house analysis tools may be required.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills, both written and verbal.
- High degree of initiative, with ability to make decisions.
- Ability to prioritize and deal with multiple assignments.
- Well versed in current engineering techniques and software and able to provide proposals to keep JTEKT abreast of latest technologies.
- Positive attitude and trainable / desire to learn.
- Knowledge of personal computers / Workstations and related software, including MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Strong understanding of multiple manufacturing and inspection processes (precision machining, automated assembly, die casting, forging, sintered metal, injection molding, etc).
- Mechatronic knowledge and knowledge of sensor selection, motor design, and electrical hardware integration.
- Bachelor of Science Degree, or higher, in mechanical, mechatronic, or electrical engineering or similar preferred.
- Minimum 6-8 years of experience in new product design and development, preferably involving any of the automotive/chassis/steering/mechatronic disciplines.
- Demonstrated project management abilities and successes.
- Mechanical/Mechatronic System engineering knowledge and experience is desirable.
- Applied knowledge of Electric Power Steering, Driveline, or similar Mechatronic systems preferred.
- Experience with Steer-by-Wire, ADAS technologies, Hardware-in-the-Loop (HILs), Plant Model, and Fault Injection is very beneficial.
- Knowledge of gear design, power transfer, and electrical motors is desired.
- Experience and familiarization of high volume manufacturing is helpful.
- Related experience should include General Dimensioning & Tolerancing, Tolerance Stack up, Computer Aided Design (CATIA®/Unigraphics®), Finite Element Analysis/Modeling, Failure Mode & Effect Analysis, and/or product validation testing.
- Previous experience working with cross-functional and multi-cultural teams preferred.

- The performance of this position may occasionally require exposure to manufacturing areas which require the use of personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, hearing protection, and other PPE.
- Travel by automobile and plane required approximately 5-10%. Both national and international travel.
- Late evening or early morning meetings are required to communicate to other global tech centers.
