Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The Bowerston, Ohio Shipping Supervisor will lead and direct the shipping functions daily in order to provide an efficient fulfillment of customer orders, in a hands-on fashion as necessary, per organizational policies and procedures.
- Manage the shipping activities and employees ensuring communications are thorough, professional and timely with internal and external customers.
- Using judgement and the best interests of the company in mind, manage competing priorities between sales and operations that are transparent to the customer and support a team approach.
- Support the day to day needs of the operation with regard to order fullfillment, inventory movement in a hands-on fashion (Working Supervisor). The expectation is the shipping supervisor is on the floor 80% of the time.
- Manage staff, prepare work schedules and assign specific duties.
- Supervise the pulling and packaging of product to ensure accuracy and safe handling for delivery to customers.
- Supervise loading of all outbound shipments via LJS delivery vehicle, LTL or UPS to maximize efficiency and reduce cost.
- Ensure inventory location accuracy goals are met which includes support of location management and the cycle counting program in coordination with the Inventory Control Manager.
- Review metrics related to shipping department performance for continuous improvement opportunities and assist with the development of visual management tools to aid in communications with site employees.
- Investigate, identify root cause and develop corrective action(s) for lost, damaged and/or incorrect shipments and make adjustments in processes and in the system as necessary.
- Provide guidance and motivation to employees.
- Assess training needs of employees and arrange for or provide training to ensure accurate and efficient operations.
- Support the cross-training program ensuring employees are regularly participating.
- Conduct employee reviews, document performance issues and administer employee attendance and performance notices/disciplinary action as warranted.
- Implement and maintain compliance with all company policies and procedures.
- Ensure compliance with health, safety and environmental policies, rules and regulations.
- Maintain a clean, organized and safe facility inside and out.
- Ensure appropriate maintenance and cleaning schedules are adhered to for packaging equipment, lifts and all other shipping equipment.
- Correct unsafe conditions in work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to the Plant Manager.
- Participate in the hiring process by reviewing credentials, conducting interviews and making recommendations for shipping positions.
- Perform related duties as assigned by the Plant Manager.
Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:
The knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the daily tasks and job duties bulleted above are as follows:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including ability to effectively communicate with internal and external customers.
- Ability to operate stand up reach and sit-down lift trucks.
- Ability to operate a non-CDL delivery vehicle up to 26’ in length and 26,000 GVW.
- Proficiency in: Word, Excel, Outlook and prior experience with a fully integrated ERP system.
- Must be able to work under pressure and prioritize workload to meet deadlines, while maintaining a positive attitude.
- Ability to work independently and to carry out assignments to completion within parameters of instructions given, prescribed routines, and standard accepted practices.
- Good planning and organizational skills.
- Ability to lead, direct, coach, support and delegate as circumstances require
- 1 to 3 years prior experience in supervising a shipping/warehouse operation or department.
- Post – secondary education and/or training in warehousing and distribution is preferred.
The physical requirements of this position are as follows:
- Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.
- Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.
- Ability to perform physical labor such as lifting and walking on a regular basis
- Ability to continually stand, bend, and to lift and carry up to 80 pounds on a regular basis
- Must be able to talk, listen and speak clearly on telephone and communicate clearly and concisely via written means.
- Ability to safely and efficiently operate sit-down and stand-up lift trucks.
- Ability to climb ladders (up to 15’).
- Ability to work in a warehouse environment (35 – 100 degrees, dusty).
- Ability to visually inspect items for defects prior to pulling the item.
- Ability to use tape guns, make boxes, lift pallets, stack boxes, etc…
- Ability to wear all required PPE.
