Special Education Teacher - Transition Specialist
(Kennebunk High School)
As a Special Education Teacher - Transition Specialist, you will deliver measurable results in providing students with direct instruction towards meeting their individual education plans and their transition from school to post-secondary pathways. Duties include providing assistance with student school-to-work transition planning; career exploration, workplace readiness, job skill development with entry level positions, and on-site job coaching. This position requires flexibility working with students both on-campus and in the workplace. You will also be a Career Technical Education (CTE) liaison as well as Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) liaison.

Qualifications: Proven professional with enthusiasm, passion, and demonstrated track record of successfully working with high school age children. Maine DOE Certification Endorsement- 282: Teacher of Children with Disabilities required. Job Coaching credential or ACRE Employment Specialist certification required as well as experience with job development and ability to create partnerships with local businesses and non-profit community. Must possess Maine Department of Education’s Criminal History Records Check (CHRC). Prior knowledge of vocational programming/training and community workforce resources is a plus. Experience working with students with moderate to severe disabilities preferred.
Responsibilities:
The Special Education Teacher - Transition Specialist will be expected to:
- Coordinate and supervise education technicians and manage multiple schedules of related services and job placements on and off campus
- Analyze assessment and performance data to design appropriate instruction
- Plan instruction to align with IEP goals and targeted standards
- Exhibit excellent time management, organization and leadership skills
- Teach students, in a respectful and positive manner, the necessary job skills to meet the expectations of the employer and Supervising Teacher.
- Introduce and prepare learning activities for the student(s), relating to the job expectations.
- Maintain strong, consistent and open communication with employers in order to develop and maintain positive employer relations.
- Accompany students being supported to their community-based site to provide on-the-job training
- Help improve job development skills; including, but not limited to, effective communication, building resumes, filling out applications, proper interview attire, etc.
- Experience writing strong transition plans for high school or transition-aged students.
- Ability to evaluate the employment capabilities of students through a variety of inventories and assessments, specifically by having a well-versed background in the administration and analysis of a wide range of transition assessments and inventories.
- Ability to network with community-based partners in order to create a cache of local businesses and venues in order to create pre-vocational and vocational opportunities such as but not limited to; job shadows, jobs site tours, work experiences, and paid work opportunities in conjunction with VR/DOL
- Experience working with special education students with moderate to severe needs
- Familiarity with State and local agencies and resources that help support students in transition to postsecondary living
- Ability to source and create transition curriculum such as but not limited to; functional financial literacy, pre-employment skills, and advanced transitional life skills.
- This role serves the needs of all case managers and special education students in the department so strong interpersonal skills are required.
- Articulate communication and the ability to utilize persuasive writing and verbal communication in order to leverage relationships with employers and community members to facilitate opportunities for students
- Be well acquainted with Vocational Rehabilitation Services/DOL and the process by which clients obtain those services. In addition to this, be well versed enough with the DOL to utilize their resources for opportunities within the school such as but not limited to Pre-ETS classes and career exploration
- Maintain special education paperwork as required by Maine Special Education regulations.
- Communicate effectively with parents, students, teachers and other related service providers.
- Report student progress in writing to parents on a quarterly basis or more frequently as needed.
- Provide consultation and support to parents and families as appropriate.
- Keep current in the field of special education concerning best practice, research, and laws/regulations.
- Monitor and analyze data for the effectiveness of the individual plan, meet goals and recommend program changes as necessary.
- Assume such other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by the Director of Special Services.

Terms of Employment: Regular school year for professional teachers. Salary to be established by the Board. This position is to begin the 2023/2024 School Year.
Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated by the building administrator or team leader, in accordance with the Board of School Directors Policy on evaluation of Support Services Personnel
