Job Description:
The Sr. Director, EH&S – Americas is responsible for the development and delivery of EH&S strategies and programs across Greif’s Americas manufacturing operations. These strategies and programs are designed to manage, mitigate, and, whenever possible, eliminate environmental, health and safety risks to Greif employees, facilities, products, and communities in which the company operates. This role is responsible for ensuring program and regulatory compliance, providing regulatory and technical support, and training assistance at all levels within the business.
Key Responsibilities
  • Proactively designs, develops and implements strategies, policies, programs, processes, systems and governance that ensure EH&S compliance, enhance EH&S performance, and drive EH&S core values and results to an operational level.
  • Provides regulatory assistance, technical support and training to all levels within business units. Leads the development and deployment of company-wide training for new hires on safety and environmental issues.
  • Directs internal and external resources at the business unit level in response to safety and environmental compliance issues, enforcement actions, emergencies, acquisitions, divestitures and changes in operations, coordinating with Corporate resources as required.
  • Demonstrates depth and breadth of knowledge in hazard recognition, evaluation and control. Initiates and drives the development and execution of tactical and strategic initiatives to eliminate hazards and reduce or eliminate associated risks.
  • Manages the application, renewal and reporting process for environmental permitting within business units. Leads the completion of annual reporting requirements/emissions monitoring. Represents the company by interfacing with government regulatory agencies and works to resolve regulatory issues and risk mitigation of future issues.
  • Leads the development and deployment of an environmental program, including policies, audit program and risk mitigation. Conducts and/or coordinates internal/external safety and environmental audits to monitor facility compliance. Logs and tracks audit recommendations to completion and assists all levels in developing corrective actions for audit findings.
  • Assists business mangers in their preparation of safety and health initiatives and budgets and in responses to customer EH&S surveys. Leads and participates in sustainability initiatives and reporting.
  • Evaluates, manages and implements standardized programs and information systems (BaaN) that monitor, simplify and document compliance to internal and regulatory requirements and permits. Advises senior leaders, managers and employees regarding safety compliance and environmental issues and develops and proactively implements risk mitigation plans.
  • Demonstrates in-depth knowledge, understanding and application of EH&S and workers’ compensation laws and regulations and translates them into proactive, actionable processes, programs and practices. Works to reduce workers’ compensation risks and costs.
  • Incorporates and maintains safety observances, including but not limited to: use of all PPE by employees, ensuring guards and safety features are working, and promoting good daily safety practices and habits. Responsible for site and community emergency services and response teams.
  • Communicates goals and objectives, applies company policy, staffs, trains, coaches, recommends salary increases, administers discipline, ensures positive employee relations and reviews employee performance.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in Environmental Science, Chemistry or related field. Advanced degree and professional certification (CSP, CIH, CHMM, etc.) strongly preferred.
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience managing EH&S for multiple operations and business units, preferably in an industrial setting
  • Experience interfacing with government regulatory agencies
  • Minimum 7-10 years of people leadership experience

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; clearly and succinctly communicates, markets, and sells value-added solutions to all levels of the company and external stakeholders.
  • Strong familiarity, understanding and experience in EH&S Management Systems and their successful implementation.
  • Experience in managing property/casualty loss control activities and industrial hygiene programs.
  • Strong substantive knowledge of regulations and guidance promulgated by governmental regulatory agencies, as well as workers’ compensation requirements.
  • Strong technical ability to work, collaborate, and negotiate with government officials, consultants, and other third-party stakeholders
  • Willing to travel approximately 40% of the time

Compensation Range:
The pay range for this position is $ 175,000.00 to $ 220,000.00 per year. Base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and geographic location. The position may be eligible for a short-term incentive in addition to base pay.
