Starting Pay $39,000 to $45,000 per year, depending on experience. Sounds good, right?!
Hours are 9:00am-5:30pm.
This position is eligible for 50% telecommuting after initial training period and satisfactory job performance.

What we are looking for...
The property claims adjuster responds to incoming telephone, internet, email, and written claim inquiries from policyholders. Investigates and negotiates settlement of claims in compliance with AFI and regulatory guidelines. This position is the entry-level position in the Staff Adjuster Career Path. Incumbent is required to meet advancement requirements within 33 months.

Core Functions...
  • Operating within settlement authority and established guidelines, provides accurate adjudication of property claims
  • Directs the assignment and work product of independent adjusters and others working on AFI’s behalf to settle claims requiring outside assistance
  • Contributes positively to loss and expense ratios through proper and necessary indemnity and expense payments

What's a typical day look like...
  • Gathers required information from policyholder and/or AFI computer system in order to determine available coverage and the facts surrounding reports of loss. As determined by established policies and procedures, assigns and oversees the work product of outside adjusters or other experts;
  • Determines a basis for claims payment amount, to include evaluation of other insurance coverage and potential for subrogation. Assembles and verifies required documentation and authorizes settlements in accordance with policy terms and established guidelines;
  • Makes outbound calls to claimants to obtain required information, provide claim status updates, follow up on previous contacts, or provide counsel on insurance decisions;
  • Maintains current knowledge of appropriate state requirements and AFI policy terms to assure regulatory compliance and accuracy of claims service provided to customers;
  • Creates and distributes required documentation (both system and hard-copy) relating to completed actions;
  • Performs other duties as assigned in support of the unit and company objectives.

What's required to be considered...
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Two years of customer service experience in a financial services environment, or one year of clerical support/processing experience with AFI (Associates Degree may be substituted for this requirement)
  • Competent written communications skills
  • Excellent verbal communications skills, to include a courteous, confident demeanor and appropriate use of grammar and vocabulary
  • Ability to communicate telephonically and in written form moderately complex insurance terminology to policyholders in a clear and concise manner
  • Working knowledge of MS Outlook and Word
  • Keyboard skills of at least 30wpm
  • Ability to learn to utilize AFI’s computer systems for data access and entry
  • Ability to perform basic math functions to include calculation of percentages and ratios
  • Ability to quickly gather facts and information needed to determine appropriate action on assigned claims
  • Demonstrates sound judgment and decision-making skills
  • Ability to accomplish work according to established priorities and procedures

What professional education requirements do I need to obtain...
  • Successful completion within 90 days of standardized training in Principals of Insurance, Dwelling Coverages, and Homeowner Coverages*
  • Ability to obtain a required agent/adjuster license within 90 days in the position, and to maintain an unrestricted license thereafter
  • Completion of INS 21 and 22 or equivalent professional designation within 33 months in the position
  • if incumbent did not have prior experience in a position with this requirement

The physical requirements and working environment stuff...
  • The work is primarily sedentary. The employee will generally be seated to perform the work, but will also do some walking, standing, bending, and carrying of light items (less than 10 lbs.).
  • The noise level of the work is low. The area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated.
