Summary of Job Duties

Salary to be commensurate with experience.
Hiring pay for this position is $22.34 - $27.92 hourly
Full salary range for this position is $22.34 - $34.90 annually

Signing Bonus
: New employees are eligible for a $5,000 bonus ; with $2,500 paid on the first payroll, and $2,500 paid upon completion of six (6) month introductory period from hire date.

Public Works, Street Operations

Improves and maintains our roadways, performs street sweeping and snow removal.

The Streets Maintenance & Operations Specialist II performs unskilled or semi-skilled work in the operation of light and medium equipment to maintain, construct and repair city streets and projects for the Public Works Department.

The City of Aurora is pleased to offer:

  • An annual bonus up to $500 (paid in December if eligibility criteria is met) for individuals whose job requirement is to maintain a CDL
  • Boot (steel toe or other safety toe boots are required) allowance in the amount of $150.00 after successful completion of your introductory period and then yearly on your anniversary date
  • The Public Works Department will provide uniforms after successful completion of your introductory period
  • The Public Works Department will provide all Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) (besides steel/safety toe boots)

The City of Aurora will conduct ongoing screenings of applications on a first-come, first serve basis; as soon as we determine we have a qualified pool of applicants, this position may close quickly and without notice.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Operates mechanized equipment such as tandem axle and single axle dump trucks and trailers, front-end loaders, snow removal equipment and related light to medium size equipment
  • Perform snow and ice control operations
  • Services, maintains, and makes mechanical adjustments and minor repairs on assigned equipment
  • Reports mechanical defects to supervisor
  • Performs additional duties as assigned
  • Acts as a lead worker to other employees

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED

Experience:
  • At least three (3) years progressively responsible experience operating light and medium equipment related to street construction and maintenance or equivalent

An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.

Knowledge:
  • Application of materials per operation
  • Work Area Safety & Jobsite Specific Safety
  • Safety practices common to equipment operation
  • Knowledge of equipment maintenance and repair
  • Knowledge City of Aurora Street System/Snow and Ice Control Plan preferred

Abilities:
  • Ability to perform strenuous, physical, outdoor labor for extended periods of time, outside and in all weather conditions
  • Ability to operate various types of maintenance and construction equipment
  • Understand oral and written instructions
  • Operate various types of maintenance and construction equipment
  • Lift a minimum of 50 pounds with or without assistance
  • Ability to work overtime, standby and call back duty
  • Ability to respond to an emergency call within 30 minutes
  • Supportive team player with a positive attitude and ability to adapt to change
  • Strong commitment to safety

Skills:
  • Construction skills
  • Skilled in the use of hand tools
  • Basic Equipment Proficiency: Bobcat, Loader
  • Specialty Equipment Proficiency: Single and Tandem Axel Trucks

Licenses and Certifications:
  • Colorado Class A CDL
  • Ability to obtain Tanker endorsement
  • Must obtain ATSSA safety certificate within six (6) months of employment in the position
  • Must obtain RTD On-Track Safety Training Certification within six (6) months of employment in the position

WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical Demands:

  • Heavy physical work requiring ability to lift 50 pounds with or without assistance
  • Frequently lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to work overtime, standby and call back duty
  • Ability to respond to an emergency call within 30 minutes
  • Supportive team player with a positive attitude and ability to adapt to change
  • Strong commitment to safety

Work Environment:
  • Works primarily outdoors in both hot and cold weather with exposure to noise, dust, fumes and chemicals
  • Able to work in confined space
  • Must be available to work overtime, weekends, and holidays in emergency situations including snow removal

Equipment Used:
  • Heavy equipment common to construction and maintenance
  • Operates vehicles such as dump truck, tractors and/or forklift
  • Operates hand tools and equipment common to custodial work
  • This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment.

Essential Personnel : When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the City, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel.
