Student Media Advisor

Job Responsibilities
Truman State University seeks a diverse pool of applicants for a full-time academic staff position to begin January 2023. The successful applicant has the possibility of renewal (11-month appointment), depending on performance, department needs, and funding.

The successful candidate will advise students working for the student-managed media network. The Truman Media Network, a student co-curricular organization is made up of four media platforms: The Index (newspaper), TMN online (web), KTRM-FM (radio), and KTRM Studios (television). Specific responsibilities include mentoring and providing constructive feedback to students daily, meeting regularly with student managers, managing program budgets, supervising use of media equipment and facilities, coordinating required FCC reporting, as well as being the program’s primary point of contact with the public. The candidate should be familiar with convergent journalism, AP style, and CMA’s Code of Ethics.
Applicants will be evaluated on:
  • Academic qualifications;
  • Evidence of effective mentoring, managing, and advising media outlets;
  • Background in, or the potential for, coaching media writing, news reporting, video production, and audio production;
  • Evidence of commitment to liberal arts education, with undergraduate student development and accomplishment as the highest priority;
  • Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills; and
  • Compatibility with the department’s needs.


Program: The Department of Communication at Truman has 9 full-time faculty members and approximately 100 students in the major and approximately 30 minors. The Communication major allows students to choose from three emphases: Communication Studies, Journalism, and Public Communication. The Community: Located in northeast Missouri, Kirksville is a cultural and economic hub in the region. Required Qualifications
This position requires a Master’s in Communication, Digital Media, Mass Communication, Journalism, or closely related field and experience with student media advising.

Salary
This is a staff designated academic position with salary of $40,000. benefits package with health insurance, retirement contributions, and some reimbursed assistance for moving expenses. This appointment may be renewed annually up
