“Life Lines” Community Arts Project of Center for Family Life is seeking a part-time Theater Teaching Artist to join our team of professional artists and social workers. Based at Middle School 136/Middle School 821 & Sunset Park High School in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, this unique multi-arts program is involved in interdisciplinary arts projects with middle school teachers and students, co-leadership of high school advisory groups, community-school partnership initiatives, and extended day and summer art activities for groups of middle and high school youth.

I. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Direct practice in theater with middle school and high school participants
  • Co-leadership with a teacher of a twice-weekly high school advisory class
  • Assistance and participation in annual events and productions which include the following;
  • An original improvisational musical that brings to life the struggles and vitality of our diverse community
  • Multi-cultural children’s theater, literature-based adaptations
  • 2 overnight camping trips for rehearsals and community building
  • Salary is commensurate with experience and education. Individual supervision and ongoing
  • professional development opportunities are provided.

II. Qualifications:

  • BA degree required, Master’s Degree in Social Work (MSW) a plus!
  • Experience with (and passion for) leading activity-based groups of youth
  • Positive energy, flexibility, and strengths-based perspective a must
  • Desire to learn about and work within a social group work model
  • Bilingual Spanish/English or Mandarin/English preferred

III. RELATIONSHIP WITH OTHERS

  • Build and maintain close, daily interactions with participants, co-workers, and supervisors
  • Engage in discussions and training regarding receiving/providing information, discussing arising issues, explaining or interpreting guidelines/instructions, and instructing
  • Have a strong sensitivity to cultural differences present among staff and clients within our organization.
  • Possess a strong belief in people’s ability to grow and change
  • Forge a mutually respectful partnership with persons served and their families.
  • Maintain contact as needed with participant’s families, school personnel, external community groups to co-exist in the same space

IV. WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Actively engage and interact with children each day
  • May be required to be active by walking, bending, standing, squatting, or sitting on the floor with children
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain a high energy level
  • Be comfortable performing multifaceted projects in conjunction with day-to-day activities.
  • May be exposed to all weather conditions and might be required to work in various temperatures in order to facilitate activities in various locations inside and outside of the school building
