GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Under the direction of the Small Game Program Director, the Statewide Game Bird Specialist (SGBS) works directly with the Small Game Program staff, including Conservation Partnership Program Leader, Waterfowl Program Leader, Webless Migratory Game Bird Program Leader, Upland Game Bird Program Leader, Wetland Program Leader, and Wild Turkey Program Leader and facilitates the overall planning, implementation, and evaluation of activities associated with coordinated game bird monitoring and conservation partnerships across Texas. The SGBS functionally serves to assist current Program Leaders in monitoring of game birds across Texas, including, but not limited, to waterfowl/dove banding, aerial waterfowl surveys, capturing/marking game birds, and various roadside surveys. The SGBS provides additional support to the current and expanding programs funded with Upland and Migratory Game Bird Stamp Funds and other internal/external funding, including, but not limited to, Texas Playa Conservation Initiative, Grassland Restoration Incentive Program(s), Conservation Delivery Network, and other established habitat programs. The SGBS works collaboratively with internal and external partners to achieve on-the-ground priority bird population and habitat objectives for priority bird species under an adaptive management framework, where possible. Provides leadership by developing training for TPWD field staff, interested partners, and private landowners. Assists with identifying and procuring funds to provide financial leverage and support for research and conservation efforts. The SGBS contributes to the goals and objectives of the Land and Water Plan, Texas State Wildlife Action Plan, Wildlife Division Strategic Plan, and major national and international bird conservation plans by working closely with district and regional TPWD leaders and staff, as well as conservation partner organizations, to coordinate additional support and resources for technical assistance to local landowners. Where needed, serves as a technical committee representative or point-of-contact for bird conservation with state, regional and national technical committees and working groups. Works under limited supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Performs additional duties as assigned. Complies with all Agency, Division and Branch rules, regulations and procedures.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree. Major coursework from Bachelor’s or post bachelor’s degree programs must include a minimum of 24 hours in Wildlife/Habitat Conservation, Wildlife/Natural Resources Management, Wildlife Biology, and/or Research Methods.
Experience:
Five years experience with migratory and/or upland game management or on-the-ground conservation planning and implementation, partnership building, and/or grant writing.
Licensure:
Must possess or be able to obtain, within 30 days of employment, a class “C” Texas driver’s license.
NOTE: Retention of position contingent upon obtaining and maintaining required license.
ACCEPTABLE SUBSTITUTIONS:
Experience:
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master's degree may substitute for one year of the required experience with migratory and/or upland game management or on-the-ground conservation planning and implementation, partnership building, and/or grant writing;
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a PhD may substitute for two years of the required experience with migratory and/or upland game management or on-the-ground conservation planning and implementation, partnership building, and/or grant writing.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Wildlife Science, Wildlife Management, Wildlife Ecology, Range and Wildlife Management, or closely related field in Natural Resources Management;
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master's degree in Wildlife Ecology or closely related field.
Experience:
Five years in wildlife management.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Required to work from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday;
Required to work overtime as necessary;
Required to perform work outdoors, occasionally in adverse weather conditions and with heavy insect infestations;
Required to perform manual labor, including lifting supplies and materials up to 60 lbs.;
Required to operate a State vehicle;
Required to travel 35% with possible overnight stays;
Must conform to TPWD dress and grooming standards, work rules and safety procedures;
Non-smoking environment in State buildings and vehicles.
