Job Summary:

This position serves a traveling Medical Laboratory Technician or Technologist in a federal facility in a Native American/American Indian community. A minimum six (6) month commitment is preferred. Options for additional consecutive six (6) month commitment does typically exist but are based on client needs. The purpose of this position is to provide support in a clinical laboratory setting and play an integral role in the diagnosis process. The Travel Medical Laboratory Technician works in support of Medical Laboratory Technologists, Medical Laboratory Scientists, and physicians to perform a variety of tests.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

• This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities but does serve as a coach and mentor for other positions in the department.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Provide medical laboratory technician services in a laboratory environment.
• Contractor shall perform phlebotomy duties and process laboratory patient samples on pediatric, geriatric, adolescent and adult patients, and ensure accuracy of testing, reporting and billing.
• Perform a variety of procedures including moderately complex analyses, with emphasis in the disciplines of Chemistry, Hematology, Urinalysis, Molecular and Serology.
• Able to evaluate requested procedures to determine the correct specimens and specimen containers suitable for analysis with a strong focus on specimen storage requirements.
• Evaluates suitability of specimen for analysis and requesting or redrawing new specimen if determined to be unsuitable for testing.
• Able to perform setting up and monitoring quality controls, calibrations and maintain proper records for quality control, calibration reports and section records as required.
• Competent in using and performing maintenance on instruments related to the daily operations of the laboratory.
• Able to troubleshoot instruments, quality control and calibration problems.
• Testing procedures are performed on a variety of biological specimens using manual and/or automated techniques requiring a knowledge base of independent judgment and responsibility with minimal technical supervision.
• Evaluates patient test results and ensures within reportable range of instruments.
• Evaluates patient test results and follows critical result and critical test protocols.
• Responsible for acting as receptionist, phlebotomist, and performing routine laboratory waived testing, such as urinalysis, hematology, serology, microbiology, chemistry, kit testing, referral services and other CLIA waived duties as required by staff medical technologists.
• Share responsibility and workload requirements with other staff members for quality control, quality assurance and CLIA compliance.
• Performs routine waived tests, reports test results, and ensures accuracy of reports by ensuring correctness of quality control and quality assurance procedures.
• Consults with supervisor and providers on abnormal results. Identifies specimens that should be referred for additional or confirmatory testing. Ensures timely return of referral specimens.
• Required to respond to inquiries for patient reports from providers, ensuring appropriate turn-around times for reference laboratory reports and will be responsible for maintaining patient records (reference lab requests/reports as well as instrument in-lab reports) in a readily retrievable fashion.
• Examines and analyzes body fluids, such as blood and cells.
• May perform complex chemical, biological, hematological, immunologic, microscopic, and bacteriologic tests; looks for bacteria, parasites, and other microorganisms; matches blood for transfusions; and tests for drug levels in the blood.
• Does not typically interact with patients directly unless it is to draw blood, perform a test, explain test results, or report an abnormal value.

Education and Experience:

• Requires regular and recurrent standing to perform tests, walking between the different sections of the laboratory and reading and bending to obtain supplies and operate instruments. Occasionally lifts 30/40 pound containers of liquid reagents.
• Involves moderate risks or discomforts associated with working in a chemical laboratory with regular and recurrent exposures to hazards such as infectious materials, chemicals, and electrical appliances. The technician must use protective clothing and gear such as gloves, facemask, eye protectors, and biological safety hoods.
• Work will be routinely conducted five (5) days per week with occasional periods of overtime.
• This position is primarily performed in an office or laboratory setting, a controlled office environment
• Prolonged periods sitting at a desk, standing in the lab and working on a computer.
• A Certificate of Immunizations is required.
• All required PPE and identification badges will be provided to staff

Salary: $29.52 per hour

Pre-employment Requirements:

Emergency Response:

Every Chloeta employee has regular and recurring emergency management responsibilities, though not every position requires routine deployment to disaster sites. All positions are subject to recall around the clock for emergency management operations, which may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the official Duty Station, and may include duties other than those specified in the employee's official Position Description (PD). Travel requirements in support of emergency operations may be extensive in nature (weeks to months), with little advance notice, and may require employees to relocate to emergency sites with physically austere and operationally challenging conditions.
