Trending Sports Reporter

Trending sport reporting requires a sense of what is fun, entertaining, quirky, and most importantly, what’s engaging to our audience. The Houston Chronicle is seeking a savvy Trending Sports Reporter who can write breaking new posts, report on trends, and also take deeper dives into the stories behind the headlines. When a WNBA star is detained in Russia, we want to be first to report the details and then follow up with a more in-depth analysis to explain the political implications to our readers. When an Olympic gymnast says she has the “twisties,” what does that mean exactly? And how can we explain it our audience and provide them with specific information around the condition? We also love the peculiar and the unexpected – Joe Pederson wearing pearls to the World Series and now infamous Will Smith smack at the Oscars. The Trending Sports Reporter will also contribute to the Chronicle’s podcast and television shows. Three to five years or experience is preferred.

Primary responsibilities include:

• Recognizing and reporting topics of interest to our market
• Ability to develop a wide array for sources and report on varying subjects
• Comfortable in using alternative story form when appropriate
• Podcast and television appearances

• Producing reader-focused content
• Driving digital readers to the site
• Work as part of a team
