JOB SUMMARY: Under general supervision, this position performs routine semi-skilled work in the operation of motorized light to heavy-weight equipment for leaf collection on assigned routes, and to support solid waste collection services
- Operates leaf vacuum truck.
- Operates rear and side loader garbage truck.
- Ability to operate various hand tools as needed.
- Transports materials and personnel to work sites.
- Assist with the collection of loose leaves and other yard waste materials.
- Maintains assigned vehicles and equipment.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
- Possession of a valid Class “B” CDL driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
- Knowledge of the principles, practices, and equipment used in the performance of Leaf Collection activities and other related maintenance.
- Knowledge of equipment operation and maintenance procedures.
- Knowledge of City geography.
- Skill in analyzing problems and identifying solutions.
- Skill in establishing cooperative and productive working relationships.
- Skill in performing mathematical calculations.
- Skill in interpersonal relations.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Crew Supervisor assigns work in terms of general
GUIDELINES: Guidelines include the Personnel Policy Manual; emergency response plans; OSHA regulations; work zone safety standards; and equipment operation and repair manuals. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY: The work consists of related truck operation duties. Inclement weather and heavy traffic contribute to the complexity of the work.
SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to operate trucks and other equipment and vehicles in the collection of leaves, litter, and solid waste. Success in this position ensures the effective and efficient collection of vegetative debris and other solid waste materials and enhances the city’s public image.
PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers and members of the public.
PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, stooping, standing, bending, crouching, or walking. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed outdoors. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts and occasional cold or inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: None.
