Under general direction, the purpose of this position is to perform delivery and transportation services to County buildings and facilities. Employee is responsible for general driving of a delivery van and cargo truck to support operations of the Facilities Maintenance Division of the Engineering & Infrastructure Department.

Examples of Duties

  • Transports County furniture, supplies and equipment in and between County Facilities to include pickup and delivery of print shop materials, supporting the Board of Elections with equipment delivery, weekly delivery of janitorial supplies, pickup and delivery of confidential documents from the county courts system, moving furniture and other equipment around to support county staff
  • Serves as lead worker for the crews moving furniture and equipment
  • Providing detailed guidance on where and when to move the equipment
  • Responsible for coordinating with staff for pickups and deliveries
  • Ensures the grounds outside the courthouses are maintained
  • Sweeps sidewalks, polices grounds, empties trash receptacles, ash trays, and recyclable materials and deposits in larger dumpsters
  • Places new bags in receptacles on a weekly basis
  • Addresses or reports problems as necessary
  • Maintains the facility work order system for jobs assigned to the division
  • Makes sure that the work orders are filled out properly and that they are closed properly when completed in a timely manner
  • Maintains assigned vehicles in a high state of readiness
  • Makes sure safety inspection of vehicles are completed on a daily basis to ensure vehicle is operational at all times
  • Performs related work as assigned by the Supervisor or Facilities Manager

Minimum Qualifications

High school or General Educational Development diploma and one (1) year of experience in operating a van or cargo truck; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Must have a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License with an acceptable driving record at the time of hire. Within 60 days of hire, must obtain and show proof of a valid NC Class B Commercial Driver's License and must maintain an acceptable driving record while employed

Driving is an essential function of this position. To be considered, you must have a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record. If your driver’s license is from another state, you will be required to obtain and show proof of a valid NC driver’s license within 60 days of hire.

Negative drug screen and background check are required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of the operation of trucks and other vehicles and the associated safety precautions; geography of the County and the location county buildings and facilities
  • Working knowledge of traffic laws and regulations
  • Knowledge of proper methods of loading vehicles
  • Ability to service and provide minor maintenance to vehicles
  • Ability to prepare and maintain records and reports of transportation operations, and quality checks
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective relationships with intra- and interdepartmental personnel, as well as any external entities with whom position interacts
  • Requires the ability to perform simple movements requiring moderate coordination, such as those needed to operate vehicles and equipment and to use switches, levers, handles, etc
  • Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sound, depth, visual perception and oral communications ability
  • Tasks may involve minimal exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, heat, odors, wetness, toxic agents or pathogenic substances
  • Tasks involve the ability to exert moderate, though not constant physical effort, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (20-50 pounds)
