Veterans Resource Center Technician

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
The following duties are typical of those performed by employees in this class, however, employees may perform other related duties not listed and not all duties listed are necessarily performed by each employee.
- Coordinates and oversees the day-to-day operation of the Veteran Resource Center (VRC)
- Serves as a liaison and resource for veteran’s affairs and assist in the planning, development and implementation of the district’s veterans educational program designed to encourage the success and retention of veteran students and their family members
- Provides referrals for specialized support services such as assisting veterans with finding on or off campus employment, housing, community resources, rehabilitation services, counseling services, and to external Veterans Administration (VA) services
- Assists in monitoring expenditure and related VRC budgets; researches and recommends equipment and materials needed for the VRC
- Performs outreach to veterans and other military personnel through veterans and civic organizations throughout the district service area; educates prospective students on VA benefits and educational opportunities at the college.
- Gather and analyze data and situations and make appropriate decisions
- Establish and maintain full confidentiality of information and records of students
- Interpret and apply pertinent federal, state, and local policies, laws, and regulations as it relates to the position
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:
An applicant can meet minimum qualifications in one of two ways as listed below:
- High school diploma or equivalent and four (4) years of clerical experience using modern office technology including proficiency with database, spreadsheet and word processing software such as Microsoft Access, Excel and Word.
- Associate degree or equivalent and two (2) years of clerical experience using modern office technology including proficiency with database, spreadsheet and word processing software such as Microsoft Access, Excel and Word.
Desirable Qualifications
Bilingual: Spanish/English.
Experience working directly with Veterans Affairs and/or military affiliated students.
Personal:
- Ability and desire to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the performance of duties.

- Ability to demonstrate fairness and patience in the performance of duties.
- Ability to use tact and good judgment regarding interactions with students.

Knowledge of:
- Admissions and Matriculation processes
- Applicable sections of State Education Code and other rules and regulations relative to the area of assignment
- Pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations relating to Veterans Affairs
- Basic knowledge of word processing software, spreadsheets, social media, internet, email system, and PowerPoint software
- Modern office practices, procedures, and equipment
Ability to:
- Operate a variety of office equipment, a computer, and assigned software
- Demonstrate understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students and employees
- Prioritize work assignments to meet important deadlines
- Meet the public, students and staff members cordially and effectively.
- Enter and retrieve computer information.
- Keep files current, accurate and in order.
- Maintain confidentiality.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to work at a desk, conference table, or in meetings of various configurations.
- Ability to stand and circulate for extended periods of time.
- Ability to see for purposes of reading laws, codes, rules, policies and other printed materials.
- Ability to hear and understand speech at normal levels.
- Ability to communicate so others will be able to clearly understand a normal conversation.
- Ability to bend and twist and lift and carry 15 pounds.
- Ability to reach in all directions.
- Manual dexterity to handle or operate materials and equipment.

Environment
A community college campus with an emphasis on student success. Work is generally performed in a busy office environment.
COMPENSATION
The salary range for the position is a Grade 20 on the Classified Salary Schedule with a range of $21.88-$29.20 per hour.
This is a part-time, 10-month position, at approximately 19 hours per week. .
