Position Description

Help Nevada’s disabled population by becoming a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor! Vocational Rehab Counselors provide the necessary services to help disabled clients work and live independently. Services include assessment, training, treatment, and job placement for Nevadans with disabilities.


This recruitment is for a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor 1. The position is an underfill of a Vocational Rehab Counselor 2. This is a great opportunity to get your foot in the door to a career in Vocational Rehab Counseling. Under close supervision, incumbents receive training in performing the duties described and may progress to the next level upon meeting the minimum qualifications, satisfactory performance, and with the approval of the appointing authority.


Vocational Rehabilitation Counselors manage a caseload budget; determine eligibility or ineligibility; assess vocational rehabilitation needs; develop individualized plans for employment (IPE); coordinate the delivery of services; provide counseling and advocacy services; provide appropriate job placement; and determine employment outcome in order to minimize disabling conditions and reduce dependency for individuals whose mental or physical disability presents a barrier to employment and/or self-sufficiency. Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.


The Department of Employment, Training & Rehabilitation is recruiting for a Rehabilitation Counselor 1 in the Las Vegas area. This position will serve in an outreach location. The Rehabilitation Counselor makes eligibility decisions for program services; provides eligible individuals with sufficient counseling and guidance to assist them to complete an adequate assessment of vocational needs; develops Individual Plans for Employment (IPE); manages cases in a manner that ensures timely case movement and delivery of services; ensures that accurate case documentation is in case files; ensures case expenditures are appropriate; completes required actions with sufficient written documentation and justification as needed to obtain the required number of employment outcomes. The incumbent will be mentored by a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor 3.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree from an accredited university in vocational rehabilitation counseling, health or social sciences, business administration, education, or closely related field; OR Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in vocational rehabilitation counseling, health or social sciences, business administration, or closely related field, and one year of professional experience providing services to individuals with disabilities; OR Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in vocational rehabilitation counseling, health or social sciences, business administration, education, or closely related field and two years of technical or paraprofessional experience providing services to individuals with disabilities; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience above the Bachelor’s degree level as described above.
