Job description
Serving on a WCC crew means spending your days outdoors, in all weather conditions, accomplishing projects that restore and enhance landscapes across Washington. Crew members serve on a crew of five AmeriCorps members, along with an experienced crew supervisor who provides training, mentorship, and development opportunities. Must be *18-25 years old. Members earn a living allowance of $1,253 twice a month ($2,506/month, pre-tax) and an AmeriCorps Education Award of $1,718.25 after completing a 3-month term (450 hours). Educational loan forbearance, health insurance and a Member Assistance Program (MAP) are available. Successful applicants will be required to verify their vaccination record or seek a medical or religious exemption for the 22-23 service term. *Age restrictions do not apply to those with military service or with mental or sensory disabilities. Priority deadline for applications is May 15, 2023. Regular schedule is M-Th, 7 am-5:30 pm. Overnight travel may be required for 4 days or 8 days in a row (known as "spike"). When serving on an 8-day spike assignment, members serve Th-Th with 6 days off before travel. Food/lodging are provided on spike assignments. Lodging may be camping, bunkhouses, or hotels.
Member Duties : This crew serves with the WA Department of Natural Resources in Skagit County. Projects focus on constructing and maintaining trails on sites including Blanchard Mountain, Cypress Island, and the Walker Valley ORV Park. Members may have the opportunity to contribute to restoration efforts on San Juan Islands! Project variety results in a great learning experience. Projects in the ORV system is primarily trail maintenance and construction, including installing erosion control measures, improving trail tread, decommissioning unsanctioned trails, removing hazard trees, brushing trail corridor, and rerouting sections of trail. In Morningstar, the crew maintains and improves backcountry campsites, improves trail surfacing, removes hazards, and installs bridges.
