Title: Youth Coordinator (Skilled Trades)

Reports to: Assistant Vice President of Workforce Development

Status: 40 hours/weekly

Pay Range: $18-$20 per hour

Position Description:

The Skilled Trades Youth Coordinator will work with school-aged youth (5-13 years of age) and adolescents (11-18 years of age) in a school environment and in an out-of-school environment. This position is responsible for exposing youth to careers in construction through engaging hands-on activities and programming.

This position will work closely with other staff, will plan, implement, supervise and evaluate activities and programs provided for youth focusing on the needs and interests of adolescents.

This position will be responsible for supporting collaborative efforts across several school sites, multiple Boys & Girls Clubs of Dane County sites, and the McKenzie Regional Workforce Center. This position will typically work mid-day and early evening hours. This position may include evenings/weekend hours for special events and additional daytime hours for early-release and non-school days. Travel between locations is required.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Planning and implementing developmentally appropriate, engaging activities for school-age youth (5-13 years of age) using Boys & Girls Clubs of America Curriculum, the YoungStar School-Age Curricular Framework, and Careerforce Build UP! guidelines.
  • Present construction discussion, demonstrations, and activities in local schools and organizations around Dane County as assigned.
  • Mentoring youth using the Check & Connect method part of the Be Great: Graduate national curriculum
  • Ensuring the safety of members and the environment through sight and sound supervision and maintenance of equipment.
  • Providing positive guidance, role modeling, and daily support to members under the guidance of assigned supervisor.
  • Maintaining an environment that is supportive to volunteers and supports partnerships with community organizations in alignment with Boys & Girls Clubs of America, Boys & Girls Clubs of Dane County and other applicable regulatory bodies.
  • Implementation of grant-funded programs and outcomes as assigned.
  • Proficiency in and adherence to all regulations as specified in DCF 251.
  • Participation in The Registry and YoungStar program evaluation.
  • Mentoring youth using the Check & Connect method part of the Be Great: Graduate national curriculum

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Participate in special programs and events as assigned by supervisor.
  • May drive Club vehicles as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned to support the mission and vision of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Dane County.

Qualifications:

  • At least 21 years of age
  • High School Diploma/GED/HSED required
  • At least one-year prior experience delivering curriculum to youth ages 5-18 years of age.
  • At least one-year previous construction, skilled trades or career program experience required
  • Bilingual Candidates (Spanish Language) are highly encouraged to apply
  • Successful completion of drug screening, physical examination, and tuberculosis testing
  • Eligibility as a Caregiver by the Department of Children and Families
  • Must be approved as a volunteer through Madison Metropolitan School District and meet required guidelines and background check.
  • Qualified within 3 months of accepting role as a licensed childcare teacher (Training Provided by the organization)
  • CPR and first-aid certified within 3 months of assuming the position (Training Provided by the organization)
  • The ability and desire to work with youth and adolescents in a variety of settings.
  • Flexibility, adaptability, and desire to work in a team environment
  • Strong verbal, written, and communication skills
  • The ability to travel throughout Dane County. Must have valid Driver’s License and insurance if using a personal vehicle

RELATIONSHIPS:

Internal: Maintain close, daily contact with Club staff, Club members, and supervisor to receive/provide information, discuss issues, explain guidelines/ instructions; instruct; and advise/counsel.

External: Maintain contact with other vendors, consultants, organizations, and others to achieve program goals and objectives, manage costs, share information, and resolve problems.

Required Hours:

The regular hours for this hourly role are scheduled for 8 hours within the hours of operations for the programming, typically 10 am-6:30 pm Monday – Friday. Holiday, weekend and evening hours will be required as project deadlines dictate. Must be able to travel to off-site Clubs, meetings, and events.

Work Location:

This is primarily a direct service position and requires work on-site daily supporting collaborative efforts across several school sites, multiple Boys & Girls Clubs of Dane County sites, and the McKenzie Regional Workforce Center. Due to COVID-19, employees are currently working remotely in a part-time capacity and with approval from the supervisor as work deadlines allow. Employees must maintain phone and internet services to be able to complete work as required. Technology equipment will be assigned to ensure employees have access to BGCDC servers and files. Employees may be required to work from their assigned office/site as needed. All COVID-19 mandated policies must be followed as posted.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Physical requirements: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating instructions, and policy manuals. The ability to clearly and concisely exchange/receive ideas, facts and/or technical information with others. Ability to visually monitor activities of club members. The employee is required to be able to perform CPR or first aid. The employee is required to use hands to handle or feel and reach with hands and arms.The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, climb, or balance, and stoop, jump, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee is required to operate a motor vehicle. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee may occasionally lift or move up to 20 pounds. Working environment: Normal club environment.
