Summary
The Residential Counselor ls a direct care staff who works with children ages 7 to 19 to coordinate a variety of activities that provide a safe and nurturing environment for the residents of the group home.

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following:

  • Maintain constant alertness and eyes on supervision of consumers at all times.
  • Observe safety measures and model appropriate, responsible behavior.
  • Implement established needs and services plan as defined by the consumer treatment team.
  • Assist the child in developing and reaching goals.
  • Assist consumers in identifying and resolving social or other problems.
  • Manage the activities of the consumers under his/her care.
  • Assisting with and teaching Daily Living or Independent Living Skills.
  • Ensure that the consumers clean and trained in cleanliness and hygiene.
  • Ensure that medications are dispensed and documented in accordance with State Title 22 requirements and company policy and procedures.
  • Prepare meals and provide daily nutrition for consumers as required.
  • Participate with consumers in general housekeeping of residence.
  • Provide transportation for the consumer to and from activities.
  • Use verbal de-escalation skills to prevent a behavioral crisis or physical assault.
  • Assist disabled consumers in eating, dressing, and toileting.
  • Management of aggressive and/or assaultive behavior.
  • Complete required paperwork of consumer's daily activities and behavioral incidents.
  • Inform the Program Facilitator of any unusual occurrences or concerns and document as required.
  • Participate with responsible parties and agencies in planning for the consumer's needs.
  • Any other work-related duties given to them by their Program Facilitator or a supervisor.

Training Duties Participate in training sessions, team meetings and special scheduled trainings

  • Complete 40 hours of annual training for the first year.Complete 20 hours of annual training for every year thereafter in accordance with Title 22 requirements.

  • Education and Experience
  • A High school diploma or general education diploma (GED) is required.

Language Skills

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as needs & service plans, crisis prevention/reactive plans, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of consumers or employees of organization.
  • Ability to communicate with verbal and non-verbal consumers by verbal and non-verbal means

Mathematical Skills

Reasoning Ability

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Computer Skills Ability to use Microsoft Word software and email.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • Current, valid, California driver's license.
  • Ability to successfully pass the Company driver training requirement.

Once trained in the following areas, a Residential Counselor will maintain their certifications in each area

  • CPR
  • First Aid
  • Water Safety
  • DSP training, if required

The following trainings must be completed through Remi Vista Trainers

  • Professional Crisis Management (PCM) Restraint Training, or ability to obtain, if applicable

Physical Demands While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to stand and walk. Walking may occasionally occur for a prolonged period of time. The employee is occasionally required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and move up to 100 pounds. The employee occasionally is required to physically restrain consumers, at whlch time they would need to move the weight of that consumer. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

  • Consumer may attempt to bite, kick, punch, scratch, pull, push, grab or throw objects at the employee, and the employee must be able to move quickly and be able to physically restraln a consumer, if necessary. The employee may need to limit mobility or restrain the consumer in the following positions: standing still, standing against a wall, seated against a wall or on furniture, or prone on the floor. This requires the employee to be able to kneel and use his/her arms to support the upper body for a period of time that could exceed 30 minutes.

Work Environment While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, toxic or caustic chemicals while cleaning the house, and outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
