CLASS TITLE: Youth Services Specialist I
Range: 23

DEFINITION

Under direction, performs a variety of specialized duties to identify and connect students to career and academic opportunities and internships through career guidance, vocational assessment, academic counseling, training, education and placement services; provides information to students and County staff; provides assistance for a wide variety of assignments related to the development and implementation of youth services; and performs related duties as assigned.

Knowledge of:

  • General principles, practices, and procedures of career and vocational education training programs including vocational guidance and case management work.
  • Training and employment opportunities in the community.
  • Basic interviewing and advisement techniques including methods of evaluating occupational skills.
  • Labor market trends and characteristics.
  • High school course work required for graduation and college admission.
  • Diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of students.
  • Procedures for implementing outreach and community partnership building strategies and activities.
  • Applicable federal, state, and local laws, codes, and policies and procedures relevant to the area(s) of responsibility.
  • Research and report preparation techniques, methods, and procedures.
  • Methods of collecting, organizing, and ensuring accuracy of data and information.
  • Techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public, vendors, contractors, and County Office staff.
  • The structure and content of the English language, including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
  • Modern equipment and communication tools used for business functions and program, project, and task coordination, including computers and software programs relevant to work performed.

Ability to:

  • Provide eligible youth with career guidance, vocational assessment, academic counseling, training, education, and placement services to enhance school and career awareness and transition.
  • Assist students with developing vocational and job searching skills.
  • Identify, evaluate, and refer students to potential employers according to student interest, needs, and abilities.
  • Determine appropriate vocational goals and placements.
  • Serve as a liaison and resource for students, parents, County Office administrators and staff, and community partners.
  • Build and maintain effective collaborations with community partners.
  • Collect, organize, and ensure the accuracy of data and information.
  • Interpret, apply, and explain laws, codes, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Prepare and maintain records and reports related to assigned activities.
  • Independently organize work, set priorities, meet critical deadlines, and follow-up on assignments.
  • Use tact, initiative, prudence, and independent judgment within general policy and procedural guidelines.
  • Effectively represent the County Office in meetings with governmental agencies; community groups; various business, professional, and regulatory organizations; and in meetings with individuals.
  • Effectively use computer systems, software applications relevant to work performed, and modern business equipment to perform a variety of work tasks.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, using appropriate English grammar and syntax.
  • Establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Education and Experience:
Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in business administration, education, psychology, or a related field and two (2) years of experience working with individuals in a vocational or instructional environment.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $5,325.00 - $6,468.00 per month
