The Center for Diversity in Public Health Leadership Training (Center for Diversity) at Kennedy Krieger Institute is pleased to announce the following federally funded undergraduate and graduate programs and fellowships that are available in 2023: The Maternal and Child Health-Leadership Education, Advocacy, and Research Network (MCH-LEARN), The Maternal Child Health Careers/Research Initiatives for Student Enhancement (MCHC/RISE-UP), The Dr. James A. Ferguson Emerging Infectious Diseases Research Initiatives for Student Enhancement (RISE) Fellowship program and the Excellence in Mentorship of UnderRepresented Groups (EMURG) for Health Equity Leaders Fellowship Program. Our innovative and “real world” experiential training programs are designed to provide educational opportunities for undergraduate- and graduate-level students in the fields of public health, maternal and child health, infectious diseases, and developmental disabilities. These leadership opportunities focus on the social determinants of health and addressing health disparities through clinical, research, and community engagement and advocacy activities.

Maternal Child Health-Leadership Education, Advocacy & Research Network (MCH-LEARN)

Brief Description: The Maternal Child Health-Leadership Education, Advocacy, and Research Network (MCH-LEARN) is a 9-week summer program that continues through the following academic year with monthly meetings. This program provides undergraduate freshman and sophomore students from the Baltimore/Washington Metropolitan region with a GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4-point scale who are interested in the maternal and child healthcare field, a comprehensive, integrated learning experience. The overarching goal of MCH-LEARN is to increase the number of students from historically disadvantaged and/or underrepresented populations who enter graduate school in MCH fields. MCH-LEARN leverages a leadership learning network formed by (1) Kennedy Krieger Institute Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (LEND) Program, (2) Historically Black Colleges and Universities, (3) Johns Hopkins Schools of Medicine and Bloomberg School of Public Health, Department of Family, Population and Reproductive Health, (4) Parents’ Place of Maryland, and the (5) Maryland Center for Developmental Disabilities. A $3,500 stipend is provided for the 9-week summer program, and a monthly stipend ($106) for the academic year participation.

Maternal Child Health Careers/Research Initiatives for Student Enhancement-Undergraduate Program (MCHC/RISE-UP)

Brief Description: The Maternal Child Health Careers/Research Initiatives for Student Enhancement (MCHC/RISE-UP) is a 9-week summer program designed for undergraduate juniors and seniors, and recent baccalaureate degree students (within 12 months of the MCHC/RISE-UP program orientation), with a grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.7 on a 4-point scale who are interested in learning more about public health and preventing health disparities. MCHC/RISE-UP is a national consortium of institutions, including the Kennedy Krieger Institute, Maryland Center for Developmental Disabilities, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Nursing, and Public Health, University of California – Davis, and University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine Center for Disabilities and Aaniiih Nakoda College/Fort Belknap Community. MCHC/RISE-UP offers public health leadership learning experiences in clinical, research, community engagement, and advocacy areas. All scholars interested in reducing health disparities and promoting social justice, especially scholars from underrepresented populations in the field of public health, are strongly encouraged to apply.

A $3,500 stipend is provided for the 9-week summer program for students placed at Kennedy Krieger Institute, the University of South Dakota, and the Aaniiih Nakoda College/ Fort Belknap Community. A $3,000 stipend is provided for the 6-week summer program for students placed at the University of California-Davis. The UC Davis program begins on Tuesday, June 20, 2023 and concludes on Friday, July 28, 2023. Housing and round-trip travel is available for out-of-state participants.

Brief Description: The Dr. James A. Ferguson Emerging Infectious Diseases Research Initiatives for Student Enhancement (Ferguson RISE) Fellowship supports public health research and professional development in the areas of infectious diseases and health disparities, with a special focus on increasing knowledge and interest in public health research careers among students from underrepresented populations. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) funded the fellowship program. Ferguson RISE Fellows may participate in 6-month (full-time), 12-month full-time, or 9-week summer public health research experiences. Fellows may also gain clinical experience and develop professional leadership skills in the public health field.

To qualify for the fellowship, an applicant should meet the following eligibility requirements:

• Summer Ferguson RISE Fellows: Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a medical, dental, pharmacy or veterinary program, or in a graduate program in public health, allied health or one of the social sciences during the entire program.
• 6-month Ferguson RISE Fellows: Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a medical, dental, pharmacy or veterinary program, or in a graduate program in public health, allied health or one of the social sciences. Students with graduate degrees received within 12 months of the Ferguson RISE Fellowship’s current Orientation (last week in May) are also eligible.
• 12-month Ferguson RISE Fellows: Must be recent postgraduate (post-master's/postdoctoral not enrolled in school) ONLY

Ferguson RISE Fellowship sites include the Kennedy Krieger Institute, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing, Bloomberg School of Public Health, Morgan State University, Howard University, Maryland State Health Department, CDC in Atlanta, Georgia, and other CDC sites, Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University, or Morehouse School of Medicine. The Baltimore sites, Howard University School of Medicine, Rollins School of Public Health, and Morehouse School of Medicine integrate clinical opportunities and research experiences in hospital, national, state, and community settings.

• A stipend is provided by Kennedy Krieger Institute and is based on federal rates for academic level. Housing and round-trip travel may be available for out-of-state participants.

The Excellence in Mentorship of UnderRepresented Groups (EMURG) for Health Equity Leaders Fellowship Program

Brief Description: The Excellence in Mentorship of UnderRepresented Groups (EMURG) for Health Equity Leaders Fellowship Program is a 12-month fellowship program that supports federal public health careers and professional development to address health disparities. This program provides students in a Master’s degree or Doctoral program, with a GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4-point scale, with placement in one of the Department of Health and Human Services Agencies. The EMURG program will help increase the fellow’s understanding of and ability to address the social and political determinants of health disparities through ongoing learning and mentorship experiences.

A stipend is provided by Kennedy Krieger Institute and is based on federal rates for academic level. Housing and round-trip travel is available for out-of-state participants.
