About ShoreCorps/AmeriCorps:

ShoreCorps is a State AmeriCorps program, funded in part by the Governor's Office on Service and Volunteerism. AmeriCorps is a civil society program supported by the U.S. federal government, foundations, corporations, and other donors engaging adults in public service work with a goal of "helping others and meeting critical needs in the community." Members commit to full-time or part-time positions offered by a network of nonprofit community organizations and public agencies, to fulfill assignments in the fields of education, public safety, health care, and environmental protection. The program is often seen as a domestic Peace Corps. It employs more than 75,000 Americans in intensive service each year.

Position Description:

Wicomico Environmental Trust (WET) is seeking a half-time AmeriCorps member for the 2023-2024 service year to work with their Creekwatchers program.

WET is a grassroots environmental nonprofit whose mission is to "champion a healthy environment for all." Our largest and longest-running program is the Wicomico River Creekwatchers program, now in its 21st year.

WET is the only water-monitoring program following the Wicomico River, its tributaries and its watershed. In addition to the Creekwatchers program, they engage in advocacy on behalf of residents of the community at large, recognizing that the best way to create long-term change is to work with existing industries and communities in Wicomico County to help them become as clean, green and sustainable as possible.

They also engage in educational outreach at events such as Earth Day, Peace in the Park, 3rd Fridays and other similar gatherings. Among their local partners are Salisbury University, the City of Salisbury, and, to a lesser extent, Wicomico County.

Member Responsibilities:

  • Creekwatchers program assistance to include: regular communication with volunteers; working with lab staff and CWC to make sure drop-off of samples on sampling dates goes smoothly, ensuring that all 26 sites are covered each week, and samples are turned into the lab on time; and sending out reminder emails to all 50 volunteers on the Friday before each sampling day.
  • Participation in outreach tables, which are largely about Creekwatchers, including 3rdFridays, Riverfest and occasionally collaborative tables with Interfaith Partners for the Chesapeake
  • Filling in as a sampler as needed when a volunteer substitute is not available
  • Maintaining sampling at one assigned site for the duration of the season(s) (2023-24)
  • Assistance with planning and preparations for the 2024 season and helping to open the 2024 season in March.
  • Similar duties to above will continue during the 2024 season until hours are completed.
  • Other Creekwatcher-related duties as assigned

Requirements for applicants include the following:

  • Have an interest in environmental stewardship
  • Have a strong interestin serving the community
  • Be able to relate to diverse populations
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Able to provide copy of either high school diploma, GED, or college transcript
  • Have reliabletransportation
  • Be available to attend the free, AmeriCorps class at SU alternate Thursdays, 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., during the Fall and Spring semesters.
  • Must successfully pass a comprehensive Criminal History Check, which includes FBI fingerprinting
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen, U.S. National, or lawful permanent resident alien
  • Applicants DO NOT need to be college students, anyone from the community who fits the above requirements may participate.

The member will begin on or after August 15th, 2023 and must complete 900 hours by August 14th, 2024.

This position is offered through a partnership with ShoreCorps, the AmeriCorps program at Salisbury University. It is contingent upon federal funding and approval of the AmeriCorps office.
