DESCRIPTION

The Assistant Academic Advisor will serve as first point of contact at Eighth College. Oversee the flow of students through the advising reception area. Field questions from students, staff, and the general public in person, over the phone, and via email. Advise students on college and university requirements, policies, and procedures. Coordinate meetings between students and academic advisors. Participate in the planning, preparation, and implementation of new student orientation programs. Assist with all student enrollment activities. Provide work direction for peer advisor staff. Offer administrative support to the Dean and Assistant Dean including collecting data and compiling statistical reports, preparing petitions for review, and assembling materials for meetings and events.

  • Must be available for occasional evening and weekend work.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in related area or an equivalent combination of experience/training.

  • Basic knowledge and experience working with a diverse student population. Proven ability to advise students on University and college requirements, policies, and procedures. Multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations.

  • Excellent interpersonal and customer services skills (poise, active listening, diplomacy, patience, discretion, assertiveness) to effectively interact with students, staff, faculty and the general public in-person, by telephone, and via email.

  • Proven experience in planning and organizing meetings and events.

  • Demonstrated ability to compile data and provide detailed statistical reports.

  • Proficiency in using computer for word processing, data entry, spreadsheets, email, electronic calendar, internet searches, and website maintenance. Experience with or ability to learn Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Demonstrated skill in establishing and maintaining effective electronic filing systems.

  • Strong ability to exercise independent initiative and sound judgment within general guidelines with the acumen and sensitivity to assess and identify those situations and decisions which require higher level approval or consultation.

  • Demonstrated skill in managing heavy workload and handling multiple tasks with potentially competing deadlines, while maintaining accuracy.

  • Proven ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills. Proven ability to understand, remember, and explain detailed information verbally and in writing with accuracy and clarity. Ability to proofread and correct written work. Knowledge of standard correspondence formats.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a team member. Willingness to embrace and follow the UC San Diego Principles of Community.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $34,200 - $79,000 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $16.38 - $37.84

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
