This role will be responsible for intellectual property matters of high complexity and impact, working autonomously. Recognized expert in patent skills, able to apply a very mature yet current knowledge of patent law strategically in order to achieve better commercial outcomes for GSK, producing work product of high quality. Uses business knowledge and broader sector awareness to understand the long-term importance of patent strategy, taking decisions even at an early stage of research that anticipate commercial and competitive implications.
Must have a high level of accountability to apply their scientific and legal knowledge to make appropriate decisions when developing IP portfolios and managing third party risk for projects that have a significant impact on GSK’s return on investment. Creative in thinking about third party risk and competition, understanding the relevance of GSK’s IP to third parties and vice versa.

Responsible with other AGCs for driving quality in the Intellectual Property department; accountable for ensuring that best practice in patent work, particularly drafting and prosecution, is current, appropriate and followed.
Responsible with other AGCs for devising, implementing and sharing best practices across the Intellectual Property department as the legal and scientific environment changes.
Partners with Senior R&D management to ensure appropriate implementation of IP strategies across asset portfolios.
Provides legal advice and influences clients in order to avert significant legal risks, by providing creative, strategic IP advice on highly complex projects of high impact without oversight.
Builds IP portfolios, understanding and driving the conversations regarding the interplay between patents and non-patent exclusivity, identifying and dealing with FTO issues and complex- third party situations. Considers for all projects the competitive situation, prior art, GSK’s business and commercial needs, advising on appropriate strategy to manage IP risk while maximizing business benefit.
Provides client advice that is strategic, thoughtful and clear on IP matters of high complexity and impact, has clear and concise communication skills and the ability to translate extremely complex matters into simple terms digestible by a wide variety of audiences.
Responsible for IP support to Business Development during complex transactions of high impact, typically acquisitions or divestments, or multi party collaborations.

Basic Qualifications:
We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:
U.S. Law Degree (juris doctorate) from an accredited law school.
Undergraduate degree in a life science related field (e.g. biology, biochemistry, or related sciences), or comparable relevant work experience.
Admitted to practice law in at least one U.S. state.
Admitted to practice in front of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO bar admission).
At least 10 years relevant experience with corporate patent practice, including filing and prosecution, due diligence, business development support, litigation and/or other inter parties' proceedings.
Preferred Qualifications:

Advanced degree in biochemistry, biology, or related science.
Excellent interpersonal, negotiating and communication skills.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with demonstrated ability to think creatively and strategically, and consistently able to propose solutions and develop strategy for projects of extreme complexity and high business impact.
Strong personal integrity.
Excellent knowledge of biopharmaceutical patent issues.
Demonstrated ability to interact with and influence senior clients and third parties.
Recognized expert in patent law and skills, with a current knowledge of the relevant science, including application of such law and science in sophisticated strategic thinking.
Proactively works with others to share information and build strong work relationships.
Actively contributes to developing others (e.g., creation of educational resources, training, mentoring and coaching others); proactively acquires and shares detailed knowledge of best practices and current trends in science and law.
Ability to lead projects involving a matrix team of other professionals, setting clear expectations, effectively leading and coordinating such team to achieve an optimal outcome.
Demonstrated administrative and organizational ability.
