Hiring Range: This position's hiring range is anticipated to be $61,672 to $65,000 annually, depending on experience.


Position Summary:
Responsible for supporting day-to-day operations of Best Friends Dogtown department to best utilize resources, meet objectives, and safety and operational plans for delivering exemplary dog care. This includes assistance with population flow, overseeing Dogtown Outcomes, and ensuring Team Leaders and caregivers are following up-to-date protocols.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Assist with population flow and integration of new dogs into the general population, overseeing the dog move process with the Dogtown Director.
  • Work with area supervisors to ensure coverage and cross-training opportunities.
  • Ensure staff is using proper dog-handling protocols and general safety protocols and is familiar with the evacuation plan for the department.
  • Work with and support the behavior team in the implementation of training techniques and behavior plans.
  • Manage weekly staff schedule.
  • Oversee Dogtown Volunteer Coordinators and work with Volunteer Department to expand volunteer opportunities and create operation efficiencies.
  • Supervise Dogtown Adoption Team and work alongside Outcome Specialists to continuously assess adoption procedures and policies.
  • Work with the Foster team alongside with Dogtown Director to ensure the flow and coordination of dogs in foster.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Skills & Experience:

  • Supervisory/leadership experience is required. Candidates should also have experience working within a leadership team.
  • Experience working directly with volunteers and an understanding of volunteer engagement.
  • Prior experience working in animal welfare. Candidates must have the experience and knowledge to work with, leash, kennel, walk, and handle all dogs, including those with health and/or behavior conditions/concerns; basic ability to identify and speak to medical and behavioral characteristics of dogs.
  • Customer-centric, non-judgmental approach to engaging with adopters, partners, visitors, volunteers, and colleagues; familiarity and comfort with an open adoption process.
  • Bilingual or multi-lingual skills preferred but not required; strong communications skills, presentation experience with the ability to professionally advocate Best Friends’ position on issues.
  • Resourceful, get-it-done attitude; the initiative to assist in any area or process; problem-solving, seeking answers independently and enthusiastically; the flexibility to persist until goals are achieved.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, a team player, personable, professional, and able to get along with people from different backgrounds, as well as the ability to handle sensitive and confidential situations.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with well-developed organizational skills to juggle multiple competing tasks and demands.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products; familiarity with shelter software/animal management software, or desire to learn.
  • Ability to professionally advocate Best Friends’ position on issues.
  • Valid Driver’s License with access to transportation to travel on organization business. Access to driving records will be needed for insurance purposes.


Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to perform a full range of movement: stretching, bending, squatting, climbing, lifting up to 40 lbs., etc.
  • Work is often outdoors in variable weather conditions and frequently requires the physical ability to perform strenuous manual labor.
  • Work at a computer for extended periods of time with repetitive typing, and arm and hand motion.
  • Ability to travel via various forms of public transportation for organization events including conferences, media events, etc.
