Position description

The Innovative Genomics Institute (IGI) is a multidisciplinary research laboratory focused on genome engineering and potential applications in agriculture, microbiology, and biomedicine. It is a joint venture between UC Berkeley and UC San Francisco, with administrative operations located on the Berkeley campus.

The IGI is presently seeking one highly motivated Assistant Researcher to develop independent research programs focused on functional genomics and epigenomics. The specific goals of the Assistant Researcher will be to establish and develop the IGI's capabilities to 1) accelerate the treatment and prevention of human disease through interrogation and validation of novel drug targets, 2) develop epigenetic tools as new therapeutics for human diseases, 3) provide mentorship and guide project development for postdoctoral researchers.

The Assistant Researcher will collaborate with other investigators at the University of California, Berkeley, the IGI, and other affiliated universities. This position is located at the UC Berkeley campus. Occasional travel will be required.

Responsibilities:
Develops the IGI's functional genomics capabilities by leading vertically integrated collaborations and independent research to identify novel genomic targets and, where appropriate, transition them to a platform-scale process.
Develops the IGI's capabilities in epigenetic interrogation of the human genome.
Consults with academic and professional researchers to perform state-of-the-art, complex research projects and experimental design.
Contributes significant original and innovative ideas of major methodological significance, and develops and executes major, multi-disciplinary research programs.
Plans, develops, and directs the activities of lab staff directly reporting to them. Advises and assists lab staff in the more difficult or challenging areas of research and experimental design.
Performs staff management activities including recruitment, performance evaluations, scheduling, timecard approvals, and handling disciplinary issues.
Oversees laboratory inventory planning and purchasing. Ensures that specimen collections and equipment are maintained properly. Ensures regulatory and safety compliance. Provides staff training in equipment use and safety protocols.
Assists IGI Directorship, especially Academic, Financial, and Executive Leadership, with budgetary forecasting and planning, operational policy, and procedure development and changes.
Sets up and manages the laboratory facility space in the IGI Building with the assistance of the IGI Building Manager.
Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
Ph.D. (or equivalent international degree).
Additional qualifications (required at time of start)
6 years of postdoctoral experience.
Preferred qualifications
Ph.D. or equivalent international degree in Chemical, Biological Engineering, Molecular Genetics, Cell Biology, and Biochemistry.
Experience in epigenetic regulation of genes.
Experience in engineering and improving genome editing tools, and in editing mammalian cell lines as well as primary cells.
Experience with next-generation sequencing and functional genomics assay development.
Experience with bioinformatic analysis of next-generation sequencing data.
Experience in gene target discovery, CRISPR library, druggable gene target screenings, and gene knock-in/knock-out.
Experience in cancer biology, in the genetic models of cancer, and the functional genomic tools to explore their vulnerabilities.
Experience writing, leading, and managing grants, and securing own funding.
Demonstrated ability to mentor undergraduates, graduate students, and/or technicians.
Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and participate in efficient and open collaborations, engaging with a diverse group of researchers.
Demonstrated ability to be innovative and able to synergize various ideas and approaches, while exercising sound judgment to evaluate and take acceptable risks.
