Career Opportunity

Under the direction and with general supervision, the Associate Engineer performs moderately difficult professional engineering field and office work in program planning, designing, construction, and/or maintenance. This position will report to the Senior Engineer of the Asset Management group in the water, gas, and wastewater (WGW) section of the Utilities Engineering Department. This Associate Engineer's responsibilities include: maintaining and continuously updating a database of WGW utility assets, conducting field verification and/or collecting GPS survey data of existing utility features, researching as-built information from record drawings, indexing as-built drawings into the department's document management application, mapping utility information in GIS database, assisting Engineers with other functions on various projects as needed, and the essential duties listed below.

  • Knowledge of civil, mechanical, or traffic engineering principles and techniques depending upon the area of assignment. Computer skills including computerized mapping.
  • Ability to work effectively with others and to be flexible in work assignments

Essential Duties


Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include but are not limited to, the following
Prepares designs, specifications, plans, estimates, and reports involved in utility project designs and plans.
Performs various studies and analyses related to planning, budgeting, special projects, and programs.
Assists in managing utility construction projects including contract administration, scheduling, interacting with consultants and the public, and quality control.
Works with the public to provide utility customer service for water, gas, and wastewater utilities.
Works with contractors and the department's construction crews to coordinate the installation of the City's utility distribution, collection, and service facilities.

Minimum Qualifications

Sufficient education, training, and/or work experience to demonstrate possession of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities, which would typically be acquired through:
Bachelor of Science degree in civil, chemical, environmental, mechanical, traffic, or other approved engineering curriculum, depending upon the area of assignment and Two years related engineering experience.
(Note: Master's Degree or registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of California may be considered in lieu of one year's experience.)
Special Requirements:
Possession of a valid California Driver's License.
