The Internal Services Department (ISD) plays a major role in supporting all County of Los Angeles departments and commissions. With an annual budget of over $873 million and 2,183 budgeted positions along with over 5,120 contracted workers of varying professions in facilities management, information technology, environmental, administrative, purchasing and contracting, ISD is the County's trusted partner and provider of choice .

The Opportunity
We are pursuing a qualified candidate to fill a Bricklayer position in the Maintenance & Operational Division. You will be reporting to a Mason Supervisor or higher level class and will be responsible for performing journey-level bricklaying work such as laying bricks, terra cotta, hollow tie and constructing and repairing walls, partitions, and other brick structures. These positions require incumbents to posses a knowledge of the procedures, techniques, and equipment necessary to perform journey-level bricklaying work.

Essential Job Functions

Lays bricks, terra cotta, hollow tile, and similar building blocks, other than stone or marble.

Constructs and repairs walls, partitions, arches, manholes, and other brick structures.

Checks vertical and horizontal alignment of structures as work progresses, using plumb bob and level.

Finishes mortar between blocks with trowel.

Fastens brick or terra cotta veneer to surfaces.

Maintains materials, tools and equipment.

May supervise helpers and laborers.

Drives automotive equipment to and from work sites.

Requirements

Requirements to Qualify:
Completion of a recognized bricklaying apprentice program of at least three (3) years' duration -OR- four (4) years' experience in bricklaying, involving the laying of brick, terra cotta, hollow tile and similar building blocks, one (1) year of which must have been at the journey-level.

License:
A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.
Physical Expectations:
4 - Arduous - This class involves frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds, often combined with bending, twisting, or working above ground on irregular surfaces. It includes those positions that occasionally demand extraordinary physical activity such as those in Safety positions.

Special Requirement Information
  • Journey-level experience applies to a person who has completed an apprenticeship program or is an experienced worker, not a trainee, and is fully qualified and able to perform a specific trade without supervision.

Our Assessment Process:
If you meet the requirements, we will invite you to participate in a written exam weighted at 100% covering Knowledge and Concepts of Masonry.

Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the assessment in order to be placed onto the list of eligible candidates.

THE WRITTEN TEST IS NOT REVIEWABLE BY CANDIDATES PER CIVIL SERVICE RULE 7.19.

NO PERSON MAY COMPETE FOR THIS EXAMINATION MORE THAN ONCE EVERY TWELVE (12) MONTHS.

Eligibility Information:
The names of candidates receiving a passing score in this examination will be placed on the Eligible Register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation. PASSING THIS EXAMINATION AND BEING PLACED ON THE ELIGIBLE REGISTER DO NOT GUARANTEE AN OFFER OF EMPLOYMENT .

Applications will be processed on an as received basis and promulgated to the Eligible Register accordingly.

Shift: Any - Appointees may be required to work any shift, including nights, weekends, holidays, overtime, and call back .

Vacancy Information:
The resulting Eligible Register for this examination will be used to fill one vacancy in the Maintenance and Operations Division of the Internal Services Department.
