Building Grounds Custodian

A custodian at Growing Up Green is responsible for maintaining cleanliness of exterior and interior building grounds. This includes:

• Emptying all trash receptacles and sanitary receptacles throughout the building; replace bags as needed as well as washing all receptacles as needed to control odor
• Removing building trash to curbside for daily sanitation pick up and properly following all recycling protocol
• Cleaning of classrooms building offices
• Assessing and stocking bathrooms: ensuring sinks, urinals and toilets are clean, toilets and urinals are flushed, floors are dry, soap and paper goods are replenished; ensure cleanliness of water fountains
• Cleaning building floors by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, and vacuuming, including all classrooms, offices, bathrooms and common areas (cafeteria, gym)
• Cleaning all fixtures (bathroom, lights, doorknobs, etc)
• Dusting furniture, walls, machines, and equipment.
• Striping and wax classroom, office and common area floor space during every School break
• Other duties as needed

Maintenance of the building, including:

• Replacing light bulbs
• Removing debris from exterior building grounds
• Assisting with mowing and trimming lawns and shrubbery, using mowers and hand and power trimmers
• Removing snow from sidewalks, driveways, and parking areas, walkways, steps and entrances to all doors using snowplows, snow blowers, and snow shovels, and spread snow melting chemicals (i.e.-salt)
• Setting up, removing and moving furniture or equipment, as needed
• Cleaning building windows inside only
• Applying appropriate measures to remove pests
• Informing supervisor of any abnormal building conditions: report discrepancies
• Other duties as needed

Must be able to:

• Move and/or carry heavy items 50-75lbs
• Ability to climb high ladder 8-10 ft ladder
• Capacity to walk up and down stairs with ease
• Requisition supplies and equipment needed for cleaning and maintenance duties
• Monitor premises for presence of vermin
• Maintain all safety, sanitary and fire codes
• Perform light gardening such as planting small flowers, watering flower pots and garden beds

Minimum Qualifications

• Knowledge of cleaning methods and the use and care of cleaning materials and equipment
• Ability to work well independently and in a team environment
• Basic computer skills
• Maturity and strong work ethic
• Strong commitment to the School’s mission
• Experience working in a childcare or educational setting a plus
• Bilingual in Spanish is a plus
  
  

Education

• High School diploma/GED Equivalent
• At least one year custodial experience, preferably in an educational setting

Required Certificates Licenses: NYC DOE/Fingerprinting Background Clearance
