0.9 FTE, 72 Hours Per Pay Period
Monday Through Friday 8:00AM to 5:00PM

The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) for Winona Health Clinics is responsible for the care of
clinic patients under the direction of the RN or the provider. The CMA is responsible to deliver
the highest customer service standards for patients and families presenting for services at
Winona Health Clinics. The CMA will participate in patient care including rooming of patients,
performing observations and gathering of data for the provider. Patient information will be
entered into the Electronic Medical Record (EMR). Direct patient care will include but is not
limited to taking of vital signs, monitoring of patients, treatments, administration of
medications, scheduling and coordination of care for patients referred for specialty care and
general assistance to the provider as needed. In this position, the CMA must be able to assist in
other departments if necessary. Maintains up-to-date knowledge in patient care as it relates to
the ambulatory setting and age specific populations.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Implements appropriate interventions utilizing practice protocols.
  • Maintains knowledge of preventative maintenance, quality control programs, and
    maintenance of proper records on all clinic equipment.
  • Serves as a resource for patients, other clinical staff, and providers.
  • Provides competent patient care. Performs and documents all standard work in the patient
    rooming process including but not limited to the patient's chief complaint, verification of
    medications, allergies, vital signs, social history, and relative health history information.
  • Performs/assists with exams, procedures and treatments.
  • Obtains ABN (Advanced Beneficiary Notice) on tests/procedures as necessary.
  • Adheres to all Winona Health policies and procedures. Reports all critical lab/diagnostic test
    values to provider. Performs, maintains and documents quality controls (i.e. logs,
    proficiency tests, and maintenance records). Assists in basic maintenance, recalibration and
    trouble-shooting clinical equipment and reports defects.
  • Assists in scheduling patients for lab/diagnostic tests/referrals. Reviews written test
    preparation handout with patients. Obtains appropriate waivers and consents.
  • Utilizes proper procedure for administering and documenting medications and treatments
    with special consideration for patient safety.
  • Maintains competency in administering medications via the following routes: IM, SQ, ID,
    oral, inhalation, ocular, optic, topical, sublingual, rectal and nasal.
  • Documents notification/follow-up of phone messages per provider's orders.
  • Assists with the maintenance and quality control of immunization stock, controlled
    substances, and emergency equipment.
  • Participates in maintaining par levels of vaccines, stock medications and supplies, and
    emergency supplies. This includes verifying beyond use dates (BUD) for medications.
  • Cleans and prepares equipment for sterilization according to established procedures.
  • Participates in process improvement and problem solving activities in clinics.

Essential Skills and Experience:

  • Graduate of a certified medical assistant program and must obtain a Certified Medical Assistant
    Certification.
  • Basic computer skills are required.
  • Excellent communication and customer
    service that contributes to a good patient experience is a must.
  • Knowledge of age specific competencies.
  • BLS certification.
