In this key leadership role, you will be accountable delivering and supporting innovative technology solutions that drive business value for Optum Care. You will be expected to leverage technology investments to enable the Optum Care business strategy (including but not limited to the achievement of short- and long-term operational, revenue, and growth goals).

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Understand and support the overall Optum Care business strategy
  • Translate that strategy into a technology-forward agenda innovating and implementing technology, managing and securing data, and delivering actionable intelligence to enable digital transformation
  • Solve business problems, create value, and achieve business results with an end-to-end constituent experience that exceeds expectations - meaning everything must be integrated & intuitive
  • Drive execution of a national level risk based platform at scale
  • Help promote customer loyalty by seamlessly implementing the technology-based future of the organization
  • Define a business-enabling technology strategy that is agile, scalable, and that leverages technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and robotics to deliver empowering business solutions
  • Contribute to business and technology strategy as a member of both leadership teams
  • In partnership with Optum Care, Optum Health, and Optum Technology leaders, develop, communicate, execute, and deliver against short- and long-range strategic plans in support of an integrated, innovative technology platform of solutions
  • Actively participate in Optum Care capital funding process and contribute to technology investment decisions
  • Understand and manage the financials for technology services
  • Ensure implementation readiness and create/enhance operational processes to increase efficiencies
  • Continually drive innovation and deliver creative, empowering solutions to business challenges by applying modern technology and best practices
  • Leverage a nimble, flexible, responsive, and customer-centric technology model
  • Partner with and guide cross-functional teams to ensure successful delivery of solutions from concept through launch
  • Lead technology integration and simplification initiatives on an ongoing basis
  • Serve as a progressive enterprise talent steward and champion, relentlessly committing to attracting, coaching, developing, leveraging, recognizing, rewarding, mobilizing, and retaining exceptional talent
  • Balance business technology innovation and operational excellence

Required Qualifications:

  • 15 + years of progressive leadership experience as a people-centric, outcomes-oriented leader who leads from the front, demonstrates the art of the possible, casts a positive leadership shadow and creates an empowered destination culture where diverse people are able to do their life’s best work
  • 15 + years of technology leadership experience
  • Experience leading and collaborating with global cross-functional teams at scale
  • Proven track record as a highly effective strategic advisor and business partner
  • History of driving transformation of new business models using technology
  • Proven ability to operate and effectively navigate in a highly complex, globally-matrixed environment with a high level of collaboration
  • Ability to build effective working relationships with executives and key business partners to set business strategy and drive change agendas that transform an organization
  • Demonstrated success accessing and influencing cSuite stakeholders inside and outside the technology organization
  • Knowledgeable of security issues and associated technologies to protect our assets
  • Well versed in emerging tools and capabilities to enable automation of business processes
  • Demonstrated success developing and deploying innovative technology solutions to meet business objectives
  • Experience leveraging shared technology services in a large-scale global organization
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly build relationships, garner trust, exhibit credibility, create value, and be sought out as a respected business advisor
  • Exceptional influencing and negotiation skills
  • Positive disruptive thinker, willing to challenge conventional and siloed thinking, drive change, and offer a different viewpoint
  • Decisive and operates with a high degree of urgency

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field or equivalent experience

Preferred Qualifications:


  • Advanced degree in technology (Master’s in Software Engineering) or business (MBA)
  • Experience in healthcare (especially the Provider domain)

Colorado, Connecticut or Nevada Residents Only : The salary range for Colorado/Connecticut/Nevada residents is $325,000 to $425,000. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
