Job description
The Facility Maintenance Technician is an integral specialty within the Facilities Maintenance department. Duties may consist of working variable shifts and occasional overtime. Work may involve exposure to inclement outdoor weather. Candidate must follow all departmental safety rules and regulations. He/she will often work independently with little direct supervision, responding to after-hours emergency facility problems. They will coordinate with trade supervisors on any technical problems beyond their scope. Candidate may be required to work flexible hours and perform other duties as required. This position is considered as essential, and employees will be required to work as scheduled when University offices are closed due to emergency situations or natural disasters. These technicians work under the direct supervision of the assigned Facilities Maintenance trade supervisor.
Position Responsibilities:
- Repairing plumbing systems, to include replacing or installing plumbing fixtures, isolating and assisting in the repair of emergency water, sewer or gas leaks, and clearing stoppages.
- Repair, replace and/or isolate faulty electrical low-voltage switches, fuses, light fixtures, ballasts, bulbs and wall outlets. Troubleshoot electrically powered equipment/appliances such as ceiling & exhaust fans
- Repair or replace damaged drywall, locksets, windows, and doors.
- Operate woodworking equipment to include power saws, table saws, grinders, sanders etc.
- Paint interior/exterior walls/structures as required.
- Provide general HVAC maintenance to air handling units, such as replacing belts and filters. Troubleshoot, repair and/or isolate faulty HVAC equipment for repairs beyond scope of technician.
- Reset fire/security alarms; monitor and reset gas-fired boilers and chillers as necessary.
- Assist craftsmen of various trades in performing specified repairs or maintenance as required.
- Perform all other assigned duties as required.

- A high school diploma or GED is required.
- Two (2) years of job-related experience in one of the building crafts trades.
- A valid Texas driver’s license is required.
Key Competencies: Work requires a broad general knowledge of competencies in the building trades technical field. This includes knowledge of Heating Ventilation & Air Conditioning (HVAC), Electrical, Carpentry and Plumbing principles. The candidate must possess enough skills to perform general building maintenance and have the competency to work independently performing facility maintenance trouble calls. Employees are expected to lead by example, demonstrating the highest level of ethics. They are expected to work together to meet the needs of the department and university, by providing exemplary customer service to the staff, faculty and students they serve.
Physical Requirements: Tasks require the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work. Some combination of climbing and balancing, to include climbing ladders, stooping, kneeling, crawling, working at heights and working in confined spaces. May involve the lifting of moderately heavy objects, up to 45 pounds. Requires a full range of physical motion to operate manual/electrically powered tools.
