This position is currently located within the Department of Public Safety but will transfer to the Department of Adult Correction when it is established on January 1st, 2023.

The North Carolina Correctional Institution for Women in Raleigh is the state's primary correctional facility for women. It houses the largest female offender population in the state and serves as the support facility for the state's other female offenders. This Institution houses up to 1700 offenders. The Healthcare Facility employees approximately 260 full time employees.

The Clinical Dietitian position is located at the Healthcare Facility in the North Carolina Correctional Institution for Woman. This position responsibilities include the following:

  • Assess the nutritional status of female offenders and make recommendations to providers regarding optimal medical nutrition therapy.
  • Counsel offenders on therapeutic diet compliance and provide nutrition in-services to food service and medical staff.
  • Serve as the liaison between Food Management and the Medical Departments, assuring therapeutic diet orders are written per the DPS-Prisons policy as well as promoting accurate implementation of therapeutic diets.
  • Develop standards, policies/procedures, guidelines & training programs that enhance the mission of providing good nutrition standards/practices for female offenders.
  • Ability to interpret/apply all state/federal rules & regulations related to Food & Nutrition.
  • Provide administrative & nutrition consultation primarily to North Carolina Correctional Institution for Woman, however, may provide assistance/consultation for other Female Correctional Units. Each facility fluctuates in depth/scope & requires the employee to respond to varying levels of inquiries to include acute patients, computer software issues, etc.

Note to Current State Employees: The Salary Grade for this position is MH12. State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position. If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase/decrease MAY result.

Qualified applicants must possess, and application must clearly reflect work experience that demonstrates the following:

  • Documented experience in performing dietetic duties in a clinical setting
  • Experience developing menus for patients in various disease status
  • Demonstrated knowledge of creating and completing assessments for patients

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Master's degree in foods and nutrition or a related area from an appropriately accredited institution that is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) and current registration, in good standing, administered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR);

or

Bachelor's degree in foods and nutrition, dietetics, or related area from an appropriately accredited institution that is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) and current registration, in good standing, administered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) and two years of experience in a clinical dietary setting;

or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
