The Clinician, Preterm Birth Reduction is accountable directly to the Director, Midwifery and works closely with the Group Care and Education Manager. The Clinician supports Centering Pregnancy and other activities designed to reduce preterm birth outcomes, including but not limited to smoking and substance use cessation, risk assessment and supporting Maternal Fetal Medicine partnership. The Clinician provides direct clinical care to patients, meeting clinical standards, within appropriate scope of practice. This position will be based out of our Family Health and Birth Center located in NE DC. This is a part-time position.
Highlighted Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Manages the care of pregnant people and their newborns and gives direct client services as scheduled including: antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum, newborn, family planning, and gynecological care, according to the standards of the American College of Nurse-Midwives, the American Association of Birth Centers, and the policies, procedures and clinical guidelines of Community of Hope at Family Health and Birth Center and Washington Hospital Center.
  • Consults with the physician, according to the established risk criteria, regarding any client who develops symptoms of medical or obstetric complications.
  • Refers to medical management any pregnant people who develops complications which, in the judgment of either or both the physician and clinician, are best managed by a physician
  • Provides group education with fidelity to the CenteringPregnancy model and in cooperation with the Group Care Coordination Specialist.
  • Provides other counseling and treatment related to smoking and substance use cessation, as well as nutritional support either individually or in group settings
  • Supports quality management activities to promote appropriate risk assessment for preterm birth outcomes and implementation of Relevant platform.
  • Manages coordination of transfers of care when needed to Maternal and Fetal Medicine partner
  • Plans and provides continuing health supervision and education to all clients under her/his care
  • Serves as clinical champion and coach for prenatal team issues related to preterm birth risk assessment and prevention
  • Documents all patient encounters, including face to face, telephone, and electronic communications, in the medical record in a timely fashion.
  • Signs off on all laboratory results, diagnostic imaging results, and referral reports in a timely fashion; sharing this information with patients as appropriate
  • Secures patient information and maintains patient confidence by completing and safeguarding medical records and keeping patient information confidential
  • Maintains effective and efficient working relations’ with the birth center staff, consulting staff, other health disciplines, families and public
  • Participates in public relations programs that publicize midwifery, advanced nursing practice and/or birth center care.
  • Performs other duties as requested by supervisor
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Current license as a nurse-midwife or nurse practitioner in the District of Columbia
  • National certification as a midwife or nurse practitioner
  • Experience with both hospital and out-of-hospital births preferred
  • Commitment to COH’s mission to reduce health inequities
  • Familiarity with CenteringPregnancy is preferred
  • Willingness to provide clinical care in evenings as needed
  • Ability to work in a nonprofit environment
  • Current adult CPR certification (ACLS or BLS for the Healthcare Provider or equivalent)
  • Current neonatal resuscitation certification (NALS or NRP or equivalent
  • Participation in appropriate continuous medical education
  • In relation to remote work versus on-site expectations, this position is classified as the following: Primarily on site: Most hours are on-site with minimal remote work allowed. Please note that remote work designations are subject to change or fluctuate at any point in time and the supervisor may require in person learning for a specific amount of time after hire.
  • All Health Staff must receive the required vaccinations. This includes annual flu and covid vaccines. Medical or religious exemptions may be requested.
