Compensation Range: $65,000 - $70,000 annually commensurate with experience

Overview:

To help develop and execute a communications strategy that supports and evaluates the grassroots organizing and public policy goals of the Housing Works Advocacy Department, and to help build Housing Works’ base of supporters through digital advertising, organic social media, texting, and other digital tools. This position requires an energetic, motivated, and detailed-oriented individual who will work closely with other Advocacy Department staff members to create, develop, and execute internal and external relations efforts. This position is based in Brooklyn, NY. We are currently in a hybrid environment of in person and remote that is subjected to change.

Responsibilities:

  • Creates and manages content for Advocacy Department blogs and web pages
  • Supports the development of our social media/digital advocacy strategies and outreach. This includes: 1. Managing the Advocacy Department social media channels, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat, and advises advocacy staff on engaging the platforms 2. Creating and managing website content, email subscription lists, press releases & media advisories, newspaper/media op-eds, event posters and fliers, fact sheets, postcards, brochures, postcards, and banners 3. Developing and implementing creative strategies to drive traffic to Advocacy platforms 4. Crafting engaging social media posts, cultivating community within various platforms used by HousingWorks, and exploring how new social media platforms and features can be used for organizing 5. Providing technical and capacity assistance for reaching out to potential supporters, moving them up a ladder of engagement, and deepening their leadership
  • Develops & cultivates relationships with relevant reporters, editors, bloggers, producers, and columnists
  • Monitors breaking news related to HIV/AIDS, homelessness, healthcare, LGBT issues, and the Advocacy Department’s ongoing policy and program issues
  • Tests, sets up, and trains staff/supporters to use texting, relational organizing, online advocacy, and other software tools for organizing, including providing coaching and technical assistance to other organizers, staff, clients, interns and community members
  • Collaborates to develop and plan press strategy for rallies, press conferences, and large-scale events.
  • Works with the Housing Works marketing team to help supporters share their stories through videos, images, writing, press interviews, storytelling trainings, etc
  • Provides event support for rallies, press conferences, and direct actions as needed
  • Assists with regular internal communications programming
  • Assists the VP for Community Mobilization on supervising interns, fellows, and peer leaders
  • Flexibility to travel and attend evening meetings on occasion
  • Other duties & projects as assigned

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications or related field
  • 5-8 years of relevant communications experience
  • Demonstrated experience with communication strategies in public policy or grass-roots advocacy organizations
  • Displayed competency managing data and tracking systems in collaboration with different departments within an organization and with external partners
  • Proven track record of developing essential online training to build people power & justice in the digital age and can use social media and tech tools to drive transformative organizing campaigns for economic, social, and racial justice
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills – please include a writing sample
  • Ability to solve problems and to think critically, creatively, and quickly
  • Familiarity with website management and CMS tools

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Ability to speak and write in Spanish
  • Familiarity with or proficiency with CRMs and basic HTML, and other base building technology tools
