Working with the AMC Research Staff Scientist and team, the Community Science Researcher is responsible for promoting and expanding our community science efforts along the Appalachian Trail corridor including at AMC lodging destinations in NH, Maine, and NY. The Community Science Researcher will develop training materials, help lead phenology team, train other seasonal staff, contact potential partner organizations and volunteers to lead community science in their own circles, hold training sessions, curate data online, and summarize participation and results. The Community Science Researcher will manage additional research datasets including AMC’s long-term plant phenology and weather observations collected at our NH backcountry huts that relate to the community science projects. In 2023, this position includes working with a team to research climate change monitoring needs or existing plans at several Northeast National Forests as well as providing examples of AMC’s ongoing phenology monitoring and success with citizen science. This is a full-time seasonal position based at AMC’s Pinkham Notch Lodge in Gorham, NH. This role will begin in Feb 2023 and go through Nov. 2023 with the possibility of an extension.
What you’ll be doing:
- Support and contribute to AMC community science initiatives, which includes conducting trainings of volunteers, outreach to partners, and developing educational content to promote and build awareness and share results
- Assist in surveys of, informational sessions for, and pilot planning efforts for several Northeast National Forests in terms of climate change monitoring and phenological bioindicators
- Organize and support other field staff in their training and implementation of community science projects
- Help maintain our community science projects presence across AMC media, the iNaturalist online platform, and other media outlets, by writing posts, answering questions in messages and comments, and sharing content with partners
- Duties include field work requiring hiking in the Appalachians on trails, with possibility of inclement weather conditions
- Help maintain AMC’s long-term monitoring datasets particularly those related to the community science efforts
- Other duties as assigned
What we’re looking for:
- Bachelor’s Degree in a science related field is preferred
- Strong writing and interpersonal communications skills, confidence working with a variety of stakeholders
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, experience with R preferred
- Resourceful and able to work well both independently and in collaboration with others
- Experience with public speaking, educational trainings or outreach, writing and data analysis
- Ability to travel to regional sites and events as needed is required
- Passion for outdoor recreation, conservation, and environmental advocacy
- You’re a positive influence and energy and view your role as critically important

Compensation and benefits:
- Salary Range: $18.00 / hour
- Onsite housing + meals are provided for $45 per week at Pinkham Notch
- Free use of AMC Destinations: 4 nights per year
- Free annual AMC membership
- Health Plan with Optional Vision + Dental Insurance when working 30+ hours per week for 6+ months
- Matching 403(b): 4% with vesting schedule
- Paid Sick Time: eligible to accrue up to 10 days
