SUMMARY

Researches, develops, designs and tests controls components, equipment and systems per job contract by meeting the following responsibilities. All managers, supervisors, and employees are responsible for supporting company quality policies and initiatives, as well as promoting and supporting continuous improvement efforts.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND PERFORMANCE STANDARDS include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Actively acquires information required for Control Systems design.

• Obtains all customer specifications relating to the job.
• Obtains or generates function specifications for the systems to be designed.
• Ensures that all required mechanical design information is received from that group.
• Determines budget numbers from job contract.
• Obtains schedule information from Project Manager.
• Alerts management of any unavailable information, inadequate budget or schedule.
• Takes care to process order changes.

Determines hardware environment for Control Systems.

• Selects hardware capable of performing the control function for which selected.
• Selects hardware which is available within the schedule.
• Selects hardware which is priced within the budget.
• Selects hardware which does not require inaccessible skills.
• Selects hardware which meets customer specifications.
• Interacts (brainstorms) with others to stimulate creativity.

Designs Control Systems.

• Designs perform functions described by functional specifications.
• Excludes from design functions not part of functional specifications.
• Designs to economize the use of control hardware.
• Creates designs that are practical and easily understood.
• Interacts with others to stimulate creativity.
• Is prepared to accept training as required to upgrade skills, on either a self-initiated basis or at management direction.

Provides Advance Orders, generates “current BOM” and shipping Orders for the purchase and movement of material and sub-assemblies.

• Advances and releases in a timely fashion to ensure outside purchases arrive on schedule (not too soon, not too late).
• Determines Advance Orders and Shipping Orders are accurate and complete.
• Provides Purchasing with information as required for outside bids on major items.

Provides a System of Engineering drawings for customer approval, purchase of sub-assembles, system manufacture and installation.

• Ensures drawings are completed within the schedule.
• Determines drawings contain all necessary information for manufacturing and installation.
• Makes certain drawings are checked to ensure against erroneous information.
• Ensures drawings accurately reflect system design.
• Determines drawings meet customer’s drafting standards.
• Ensures drafting quality standards.
• Makes certain drawings are updated to reflect changes made in Plant and Field, then filed.

Provides software as required by system design.

• Ensures software performs functions described in functional specifications.
• Ensures software provides control which is intrinsically safe.
• Determines software is well structured and easily understood by others.
• Makes certain software is properly documented so its function is understandable to others.
• Makes certain software is completed on schedule and within budget.
• Interacts with others to stimulate creativity.
• Ensures attention is paid to fault recovery when software is documented.

Provides documentation for the generation of operator and maintenance manuals.

• Generates all text required for controls system operation.
• Makes certain all purchased components information is gathered and included in manuals.
• Makes certain all manual drawings are accurately complete.
• Makes certain any and all software is documented and included.

Supervises the work of Draft persons, Programmer, Technicians and Outside Vendors.

• Advises Management when additional help is required to complete work on schedule.
• Provides clear information when assisted by others.
• Supervises others assigned to the job to ensure standards, schedule, functional specifications and budget are in compliance.

Supervises start-up and demonstration of Control Systems locally and in the field.

• Coordinates with Manufacturing to ensure controls designs are properly implemented.
• Interfaces with Mechanical Designers and Manufacturing personnel to correct problems which surface during try-out.
• Lines-up Field Superintendent with information for field installation.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s degree (BEE) from four-year college or university; or one to two years’ related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Additional necessary training (courses, seminars) would include:

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Must possess capacity and skill for handling stressful situations during machine start-up.
