The New York City Department of Investigation (DOI) is one of the oldest law enforcement agencies in the country with a mission of combating municipal corruption. It serves the people of New York City by acting as an independent and nonpartisan watchdog for New York City government, City agencies, and City employees, vendors with City contracts, individuals and entities that receive City funds.

DOI is seeking a Deputy Inspector General who will supervise a team of investigators in Squad 10, a unit that focuses on investigations of corruption, waste, fraud, conflicts of interest and gross mismanagement relating to the four agencies it oversees: the NYC Department of Environmental Protection, the NYC Department of Design and Construction, the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation and the NYC Department of Transportation. The role of the Deputy Inspector General will involve supervising investigations, planning and overseeing field activities, drafting and revising reports, and assisting in managing the day-to-day operations of Squad 10. This individual should have the investigative and leadership experience to advance complex, high-impact investigations and motivate both junior and mid-level team members.

If selected, the candidate will be fingerprinted and undergo a background investigation. In addition, for positions that have a law enforcement and/or investigative function, the candidate's consumer credit history will be reviewed during the background investigation, and as otherwise permitted by NYC Administrative Code § 8-107(24)(b)(2)(A).

Minimum Qual Requirements

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university and four years of full-time experience in investigation, auditing, law enforcement, law security, management analysis, or in a major operational area of the agency to which the assignment is to be made; at least 18 months of which must have been in a supervisory, administrative, managerial or executive capacity, and the approval of the Commissioner of Investigation; or

2. Education and/or experience equivalent to “1” above. However, all candidates must have the approval of the Commissioner of Investigation and 18 months of supervisory, administrative, managerial or executive experience; or 18 months of experience in the exercise of discretion and professional judgment in significant policy matters related to criminal justice or areas particularly relevant to the Office of the Inspector General to which the candidate would be assigned.

Preferred Skills

1. At least five years of experience leading complex investigations such as work as a prosecutor, forensic auditor, or investigator conducting complicated, long-term investigations.
2. Experience managing others.
3. Ability to work well in a team.
4. Demonstrated ethics and sound judgment.
5. Demonstrated ability to analyze and assess and draw conclusions based on a multitude of complex documents/data, including but not limited to policies, procedures, and financial documents.
6. Strong writing skills and ability to write and edit memos and public reports.
7. Strong interpersonal skills, communication, and interviewing skills.
8. Strong computer skills, including Word, Excel, and databases.
9. Strong organizational skills and proven ability to manage time efficiently, meet deadlines and multi-task.
10. Ability to initiate and independently drive projects to completion.
11. Exercises discretion with respect to sensitive and confidential information.
12. Knowledge and experience within New York City Department of Investigation.
