Backyard Buddy and Warren Steel Specialties are seeking an experienced Design & Manufacturing Engineer for their operations in Warren, OH. This new position is being created to support new product development necessary to support the growth initiatives planned for both companies.

Backyard Buddy produces automotive lifts for the homeowner and small commercial operations and has been in business for over 30 years. Warren Steel Specialties produces products that also support garage solutions and has been in business for over 90 years. Both companies are managed by the same team and are located less than two miles from each other.

A successful candidate should have experience designing consumer products made from structural materials, as well as a basic understanding of manufacturing methods needed to support the implementation of their product design. Experience in machine design would be considered a plus. A proven ability to start with a concept, design, prototyping, testing, and into production in an efficient and thorough manner is required. Additionally, familiarity with quality tools and gages, and fixturing is considered a plus.

This candidate will participate in projects with direction from the Engineering Manager. The position requires an individual that keep projects moving and requires little day-to-day direct supervision to stay on track with deadlines. They should be a self-starter and a motivated individual to keep a project moving forward and on track with the companies long term goals.

The individual must also be able to juggle multiple projects, as well as be comfortable in a lean, agile team environment.

This position is an initial hire in what is expected to be a growing part of the company and could lead to additional career growth for the right candidate.

Responsibilities and duties of this position include but are not limited to:

  • Product development and design.
  • Fixture and gage design.
  • Project management, including defining projects and developing project plans and schedules
  • Design in 2D & 3D CAD software.
  • Provide FEA analysis of new and existing design components.
  • Testing & Implementation of design components.
  • Coordinate and oversee external and internal teams, suppliers, and manufacturers to ensure products are built to defined specifications.
  • Modify and maintain drawings and designs
  • Support production with engineering input, manufacturing engineering task. and product and process documentation.
  • Create and maintain BOM and drawing sets.
  • Ensure compliance with engineering design standards and industry specifications.
  • Participate in assembly and set up activities to ensure components and systems are conforming to engineering design standards and industry standards.

Requirements:

  • 5+ years of engineering experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Bachelor Level Engineering Degree or equivalent experience
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills to be applied in design, troubleshooting, and manufacturing systems
  • Understanding of tolerancing and process capability and the impact on designs
  • Demonstrated ability to efficiently produce and maintain mechanical designs and manufacturing drawings
  • Demonstrated ability to meet timelines and specifications for design process projects as assigned. Important to be able to simultaneously organize and successfully execute multiple project responsibilities is a must.
  • Excellent interpersonal, mathematical, verbal, written, and presentation skills. Ability to work both independently as well as with the team
  • Proficiency with the following software preferred:
  • Autodesk Inventor
  • AutoCAD
  • Microsoft Office Suite - Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • CAM is a plus
