Position Title: Development Coordinator
Reports to: Director of Development Operations
Location: Hybrid – Boston, MA (HQ)


Founded in 1876, the Appalachian Mountain Club (www.outdoors.org) is the oldest conservation and recreation organization in the United States. The AMC mission is to foster the protection, enjoyment and understanding of the outdoors, with a focus on the mountains, forests, rivers and trails from Washington, DC to Maine. Position Description Summary:

This Development Coordinator (DC) role is a terrific opportunity for a service- and systems-oriented person to serve on a high-performing, mission-driven team, and gain exposure to nonprofit fundraising in an entry-level role.

As a member of a15-person Development Team, the DC provides administrative and logistical support for AMC’s fundraising efforts that bring in over $14 million annually. Reporting to the Director of Development Operations, the DC position is based at AMC’s Boston headquarters, with an option for a flexible hybrid schedule that balances in-office time with working from home.


What you’ll be doing:

Constituent Relations and Stewardship

  • Coordinate paper and electronic donor acknowledgments. Periodically draft and update acknowledgment templates. Manage the merging, editing, proofing, and personalization of gift acknowledgments.
  • Pull mail files for member card fulfillment. Check data for accuracy, send to vendor, review live proofs, and update Salesforce.
  • Serve as point of contact for donor inquiries. Respond to and maintain donor correspondence via email, mail, and phone.
  • Create and send Development email communications using Marketing Cloud.

Gift Processing and Database Integrity

  • Ensure accuracy in processing, tracking, and gift reporting.
  • Maintain accurate donor information and history in Salesforce.
  • Create and utilize complex Salesforce reports.

Editing and Proofreading

  • Support the member renewal and acquisition process by proofreading live copy of letters and data files.
  • Assist with the creation and editing of donor outreach pieces, including proposals, letters, presentation materials, and stewardship pieces.
  • Work with AMC web team to ensure Development webpages remain up-to-date and accurate.

Departmental Support

  • Assist with monthly giving, leadership giving society, and planned giving program administration.
  • Support front-line fundraisers and Chief Development Officer with meeting preparation, including preparing materials (print and electronic) and assisting with meeting coordination, as needed.
  • Participate and assist in the planning of development events ranging from one-hour development meetings to five-day trips.
  • Manage and organize donor files as well as maintain inventory of Development materials and supplies.
  • Participate in organization-wide initiatives, such as staff meetings and retreats, task forces, and promotional events as requested.
  • General office duties, including photocopying, errands, and filing.
  • Other membership and development duties as assigned.


What we’re looking for:

  • You have a Bachelor’s degree and experience in an office setting; or Associate’s degree and two to three years of administrative experience.
  • You have database skills; experience with Salesforce and Marketing Cloud software a plus.
  • You are organized and have superb logistical skills and attention to detail.
  • You can manage and prioritize numerous projects on an ongoing basis.
  • You are customer-service oriented and enjoy working with a wide variety of people.
  • You have excellent writing, proofreading, and copy-editing skills.
  • You are a strong verbal communicator.
  • You have the aptitude to communicate AMC’s mission and programs with sincerity, persuasion, and passion.
  • You can maintain confidentiality, especially relating to donor information.
  • Love of the outdoors a plus.


Compensation and benefits:

  • Salary Range: $42,000-$47,000
