What are the Responsibilities of a DSP (Direct Support Professional)?

DSPs support individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) by providing them with safe living environments, helping them with daily tasks, and teaching them life skills. This could include:

  • Assisting in meal preparation and follow menus.
  • Maintaining a sanitary environment.
  • Evaluating and documenting client progress.
  • Administering client medication treatments, per agency policy.
  • Attending to client medical needs.
  • Utilizing a basic knowledge of behavior management.
  • Initial Training Hours must be completed during daytime hours.

Shift Hours

  • Sunday Overnight 10:30am - 8:30 am
  • Tuesday Overnight 3:30 pm - 8:30 am

What are the requirements to become a DSP?

  • No experience is required.
  • A sincere desire to work with adults with intellectual/developmental disabilities (I/DD) is the most critical qualification.
  • Ability to communicate and work positively with adults with I/DD and their families, other community members and program staff.
  • Must be literate and capable of understanding written and verbal orders.
  • Must have the ability to stay calm in stressful situations and be able to respond in emergency situations at all times.
  • Must be 18 years or older and eligible to work in the United States.
  • Must consent to and pass a criminal background check.
  • Per Oregon Health Authority mandates, Up & Out, Inc. requires staff be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by the time of hire, including a booster.

  • Pay rate starts $20.00/hour.
  • Staff working Overnight Awake shifts between 9:00 pm and 9:00 am will receive a $0.50 per hour shift differential.
