About This Role
The Director of Global Strategic Sourcing is responsible for long-term purchasing planning, sourcing category strategy development and execution, category performance management for end-to-end source to pay process, supplier relationship management, savings, and continuous improvement of Biogen’s Direct Materials Sourcing Category, ~$300M spend. This role will provide leadership on a global category and ensure procurement leadership understands priorities and needs for category under responsibility. The individual will make recommendations to leadership from a customer standpoint, by aggregating the voice of the internal customer while ensuring appropriate resourcing and bandwidth meets the business needs. This role will identify and lead CI initiatives in partnership with stakeholders. The Director of Global Direct Materials Category will report into the Chief Procurement Officer.
Category Management:
- Lead a global strategic category including managing subcategory leaders to develop and implement category strategies
- Develop and implement global category and subcategory strategies for:
o Consumables
o Filters
o Cell Culture Media
o Chromatography Resin
o Packaging and Shipping Components
- Responsible for global raw materials supply risk monitoring and supplier-related mitigation
- Responsible for supplier performance management and continually improving category strategies
- Support globalization of processes to drive efficiency, leverage, and savings.
- Leads cross-functional teams using spend data analytics, market research, benchmarks, and cost modeling to identify and leverage high value opportunities that deliver innovative and sustainable value, operational efficiencies, and risk mitigation to the business
- Partners with senior key stakeholders to build relationships that facilitate identification and realization of business value and savings
- Continually monitors the market to understand leading practices and changes in market conditions
- Responsible for global GMP materials purchasing, including:
- Management of site-based purchasing teams in US (NC and MA) and Solothurn, Switzerland
- Purchase order creation, issuance, supplier confirmation and order expediting
- Forecast delivery to suppliers
- Supply disruption issue escalation and supplier related resolution
- Purchasing related requirements for change controls, supplier notifications, and new item enrichment
- Develops and implements sourcing, negotiating, and contracting strategies to achieve category goals
- Develops and provides direction and improves strategy for catalogs, buying channels, and sourcing playbook development
- Ensures efficiency of events through appropriate use of buying channels, catalogs, and RFx events and champions ongoing continuous improvement.
- Partner with category analysts and procurement operations to ensure all are aligned to category strategy/plan to maximum value
- Provides leadership for raw materials cross functional risk management strategy
- Responsible for supplier relationship management program for materials suppliers, including stratification, governance, performance management, strategic and operational reviews, and issue escalation/resolution
- Responsible for supplier management ensuring the appropriate level of oversight, direction, development, and compliance to contracted terms based on the defined criteria
- Serves as a supplier relationship manager for identified key suppliers
- Responsible for supplier evaluations including understanding capabilities and risk prior to and during the relationship
- Responsible for business stakeholder management by working collaboratively and representing all procurement – direct, indirect, strategic, and transactional activities – to the respective businesses.
- Partners with the business stakeholders at appropriate levels, hands on, for the respective category and facilitates resolution and communication of all other procurement activities
Who You Are
You are an experienced procurement leader with expertise in Direct Materials. You are proactive in engaging with internal business stakeholders and exploring innovative ways to add value. You have demonstrated success in leading a global team of managers in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
- 12-15 years' experience including the below:
- Accomplished in category management (10 years+) and has subject expertise for category (8 years+)
- Strong experience with negotiation of contract and commercial terms and conditions and able to coach others
- Strong global leadership & influencing skills that inspire trust, collaboration, operational excellence (8 years+)
- Strong project management skills with the ability to plan tasks, assign resources, manage progress, remove barriers, manage change, resolve conflict, build consensus, and motivate team members across multiple projects concurrently (5years+)
- Excellent interpersonal, motivational, and leadership skills
- Communicates and influences effectively, with the ability to motivate and influence others inside and outside of own function
- Ability to deal with change and ambiguity effectively
- Ability to prioritize, organize and multitask in a flexible, fast-paced, and challenging environment
- Strong process and cost improvement skills
- Undergraduate degree required; advanced/graduate degree preferred.
