Job Overview
The Director of User Experience and Development is the product manager for the web properties (including calledtobe.georgetown.edu, giving.georgetown.edu, alumni.georgetown.edu, today.advancement.georgetown.edu, feed.georgetown.edu, and special event websites) that connect Georgetown University with alumni, donors, and friends, and expand the community of people and organizations interested in supporting Georgetown’s strategic priorities.
Using input from users, internal stakeholders, and the Associate Vice President of Communications, the director maintains a sophisticated understanding of OA business needs; develops a coherent, comprehensive, data-driven web strategy to meet those needs; translates that strategy into tactics/operational plans; drives execution of web projects across the communications team; and manages a team of UX staff and developers.
The director is deeply conversant in user experience best practice and web development. They bring empathy to their work, with a strong understanding of how to develop websites that serve diverse audiences and prioritize accessibility. The director is also an experienced and respected expert and leader, able to communicate thoughtfully and clearly about digital strategy, evolve that strategy to align with changing business needs, and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders within and beyond OA. Finally, the director has a strong project management background, ensuring that projects are well-planned and are delivered on time and on budget.
Work Interactions
This is a highly collaborative role, working closely with
  • the AVP and peer communications leaders on developing strategy;
  • members of the creative team on web design;
  • members of the editorial team on content strategy;
  • members of the digital channel team on conversion and optimization;
  • members of their own UX/dev team on technical specifications and implementation; and
  • stakeholders within and beyond OA on understanding broader business needs.
The director reports to the Associate Vice President of Advancement Communications and directly supervises the user experience manager and two web developers. The director’s scope is closely related to—and often intersects with— leaders of the digital channel strategy and design. These leaders will work closely to understand needs, propose solutions that align with university brand/visual identity and broader digital strategy, and determine processes and timelines for implementation.
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience
  • 5+ years of professional experience, including in user experience strategy, web development, and/or product management
  • Demonstrated skill in designing and building user-centered websites that advance business goals.
  • Supervisory/team management experience, ideally in leading teams through simultaneous complex projects
  • Experience managing/collaborating with developers
  • Experience managing product/feature backlog
  • Experience working with enterprise content management systems, especially WordPress
  • Understanding of the development of web experiences for diverse audiences, with an emphasis on inclusivity and accessibility
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to collaborate with designers, developers, business partners, and others to develop a cohesive web platform
  • Flexibility and creativity
Preferred qualifications
  • Higher ed, fundraising, and/or digital marketing experience
  • Experience with:
  • Conducting thoughtful user research
  • Creative and disciplined project management
  • Creating process flows, site maps, wireframes, prototypes, and functional specifications
  • Extracting and applying lessons from data
  • HTML/CSS and JavaScript
