DEFINITION
Under general supervision, recruits, manages and develops volunteers to assist in the staffing for the Discovery Center and the Nature Area tours; performs related or other work as required.

WORKING HOURS: Hours may vary depending upon department needs.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives direct supervision from higher level supervisory and management staff.

Examples of Duties

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

Assists in the development of programs and exhibits designed to interpret the natural history and highlight the diverse habitats of the Nature Area;

Promotes Lodi Lake Park Nature Area and Discovery Center visitation through outreach to individuals and groups served by the Lake and it's programs;

Assist and promote the development of additional programs for students and residents to explore and become stewards of the Nature Area;

Solicits support by contacting individuals and organizations who can assist and partner with the departments to support the goals and objectives of all lake programs;

Recruits and orients Docent volunteers for the Nature Area tours and Discovery Center;

Provides ongoing training and education opportunities for new and existing Docents;

Coordinates with department staff and internal marketing support to ensure outreach to local school districts to encourage student tours;

Schedule all tours for the Nature Area - student, adult or community;

Coordinate with department staff to ensure invoicing, billing and remittance is complete;

Provide coverage for Nature Area tours when Docent coverage is insufficient;

Assist in preparing and submitting monthly reports;

Ensures that the Discovery Center facility and its collections are maintained utilizing the assistance of volunteer staff or City employees;

Works closely with the Public Works Department's Watershed Program Coordinator;

May be required to perform basic janitorial services for the Discovery Center building to assist in keeping exhibits and building clean.

Typical Qualifications

Any combination of experience and education that would likely produce the qualifying knowledge and ability. A typical combination is:

Education
Completion of thirty semester units at an accredited college or university with major coursework in biology, ecology, natural resources, environmental studies, or related field.

Experience
Experience working with the public, giving presentations or speeches is desirable. Additional relevant work experience may be substituted for the education requirement.

Driver's License:
Possession of a valid Driver's License issued from the California Department of Motor Vehicles.

Ability to:
Speak clearly and give oral presentations;

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, volunteers and those contacted in the course of the work.

Knowledge of:
Modern office technology, such as filing systems, personal computers, and data processing, data base, and spreadsheet software programs.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in outside weather conditions. The employee occasionally works near precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, extreme cold, and extreme heat. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

HIRING PROCEDURE - Applicants must possess the minimum qualifications by the final filing date. Eligible lists are established upon successful completion of the selection process. The candidates must be successful in each part of the testing. To fill each vacancy the hiring department will request names to be certified from the eligible list and will make a selection from this certification list.

CONDITIONAL JOB OFFERS - Conditional job offers are subject to successful completion of a medical drug screen and/or physical. Candidates should not quit or give notice to their current employer until final notification has been awarded by the Human Resources Division.

MEDICAL-DRUG SCREENING – All positions may be subject to a physical or drug screen issued by a qualified medical physician assigned by the Human Resources Division. Under the requirements of the Drug Free Workplace Act of 1988, the City of Lodi has been designated as a drug-free workplace.

APPOINTMENT - At the time of appointment all candidates will be required to execute an oath of allegiance and complete Form I-9 - Employment Eligibility Verification in compliance with the Immigration and Naturalization Act. United States citizenship is not required. All new appointees are required to successfully complete a probationary period of twelve months.
