Position Summary:

Independently provides full range of professional editorial and writing skills. Manages projects in the preparation and release of news items, special articles, annual publications and information booklets; or responsible for providing media communication/public relations services for Health Science Center units both internally and externally through a variety of public information tools.

Position Key Accountabilities:

1. Manages publication or writing projects, including assigning work to Editors, support staff and/or outside writers.
2. May develop and maintain costs and budgets for managed projects and adhere to budget.
3. Forecasts and develops strategic plans for future publication efforts.
4. Creates and initiates story ideas.
5. Performs investigations by gathering information through interviews and other forms of research.
6. Performs complex editing tasks checking for grammar, style, and content.
7. Produces drafts of publications.
8. Reviews publication drafts with data sources and with medical or scientific editors. Finalizes and produces publications.
9. May design layouts and visuals. Develops concepts and obtains photos and other visuals as needed.
10. May act as managing editor for major publications.
11. Evaluates effectiveness of current program and makes recommendations for improvement.
12. May transfer publications to electronic format as well as design and maintain web site of publication.
13. Supervises vendor/contract relationships.
14. Either directly supervises a staff and manages Human Resources activities such as recruiting and selection, hiring and termination, training, professional development, mentoring counseling, performance evaluations, and salary planning; or assigns and checks work of editors and support staff.
15. Maintains effective relationships. Markets product to internal and external audiences including representatives of various media.
16. Performs other duties as assigned.
