Position Summary & Responsibilities:
Position Summary:
This position is located in Garnett within District Four. This position exists to assist the construction engineer in the management of the construction office by supervising the technical staff, serving as a project manager on construction projects; assigning personnel to projects; and ensuring that surveys, testing procedures, documentation, and other inspection duties are properly carried out and completed.
Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:
- Assists the construction engineer in the management of the construction office by supervising the technical staff.
- Serves as the project manager in charge of complex construction projects.
- Prepare work schedules for subordinate technicians to observe the contractor's operations to ensure compliance w/contract provisions, standard specifications, plans, etc. This includes testing of all materials such as aggregates, bituminous mixtures, concrete mixtures, and soils.
- Schedules and provides oversight and indirect supervision over consultant inspectors on these projects. Makes determination on the charges of working days and represents KDOT in all project-related meetings and conferences.
- Responsible for the preparation of field-designed projects such as 1R projects, bridge set-aside projects, culvert set-aside projects, and 3R modifications.
- Assigns subordinate technicians to this work.

Qualifications:
Licensing & Certification:
- Valid Driver’s License at time of appointment.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Five years of experience in engineering technical support. Education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency.
- Experience in specific areas of construction such as surveying, inspection, testing and drafting.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Computer experience in software programs such as MicroStation and Geopak.
- Organizational & supervisory experience for planning, organizing, & coordinating a large group of technicians.
- Ability to communicate clearly & effectively, both orally & in writing in order to establish & maintain effective working relationships.
- Ability to interpret & explain applicable complex regulations, statutes, plans, specs, & administrative functions.
