Description/Job Summary
Lindahl Reed is hiring an Environmental Outreach Specialist to support the MCBH Environmental Compliance and Protection Division (ECPD), located in Marine Corps Base Hawaii (MCBH), Kaneohe Bay.

This includes: Briefing military and non- military personnel (civilians, contractors, families, local schools, community groups, members of the public) on various MCBH environmental awareness issues; leading volunteer field tours/trips; developing outreach/educational materials (pamphlets, CDs, video storyboard/scripts); composing articles for public postings; reviewing MCBH Environmental website to identify out of date information and recommended improvements. Work collaboratively with MCBH ECPD staff and other MCBH Directorates.

Multiple MCBH ECPD programs for outreach may include: Environmental Management System (EMS), Natural Resources, Cultural Resources, Oil Spill Response, Pollution Prevention, Air Quality, Drinking Water, Waste Water, Storm Water, Solid Waste, and Recycling.

Position Responsibilities

BRIEFINGS, ENVIRONMENTAL OUTREACH

  • Schedule and perform briefings (ECPD-furnished slides/videos) on environmental issues associated with MCBH properties and jurisdictional waters. Briefings and educational talks will cover a range of issues to include coral reefs, feral animal control, landscaping and vegetation control, endangered species and migratory birds, cultural/historic resources, best management practices (BMP) storm water runoff pollution prevention, recycling, solid waste disposal.
  • Coordinate with MCBH ECPD Program Managers to ensure the most up-to-date information is being passed
  • Briefings shall primarily occur aboard MCBH properties and periodically (when deemed appropriate by COR) at surrounding local community locations

MCBH ENVIRONMENTAL PUBLIC WEBSITE MANAGEMENT

  • Review and recommend updates to the MCBH ECPD public website for information content, accuracy of information, visual appeal, relevancy, and organization.
  • Develop website materials to fill in informational gaps
  • Compose written environmental awareness articles for social media posting
  • Promote the MCBH ECPD website

OUTREACH EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS

  • Update or create, reproduce, and distribute environmental educational flyers, pamphlets, signs and other environmental oriented media. Update as needed for current information content and accuracy, visual appeal, relevancy, and organization.

VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES, TOURS, SPECIAL EVENTS

  • Coordinate and assist with managing volunteer support events/projects/tours
  • Conduct tours of significant environmental sites
  • Coordinate and/or participate in special events (such as Earth Day) or activities to promote the protection of MCBH environment

Skills and Knowledge Required:

  • At least five (5) years of similar/relevant experience or a Bachelor’s Degree with one (1) year of similar/relevant experience.
  • Strong communications skills, the ability to interact effectively in a friendly, and professional manner with military personnel and their families, civilian and contractor workforce, grade-school educators and students, local island communities, and volunteers
  • Knowledge of Hawai’i’s natural resources (marine life, wildlife, native plants, oceans, reefs, shores, etc), native Hawaiian and local multi-ethnic culture (local sensitivities), and United States military culture
  • Knowledgeable in use of the Microsoft suite of products, i.e., Word, Power Point,Teams, and Excel programs
  • Desired knowledge of website use and content
  • Has fundamental knowledge of Federal and State of Hawaii environmental laws.
