High school diploma or general education (GED) with three years security experience; or any equivalent combination of experience and training that would provide the following knowledge, abilities, and skills: Considerable knowledge of laws pertaining to trespassing, breaking and entering, destruction of property, drugs, alcohol, and other school regulations related to student/faculty safety and the security of school property. Ability to analyze situations and take quick, effective, and reasonable course of action. Ability to exercise good judgment. Ability to deal courteously with students, parents, and the general public. Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing. Possession of a Virginia driver's license.
Must be 21 years old at the time of hire. Must hold and maintain Virginia School Security Officers (VASSO) certification. The employee must maintain certification in the prescribed Physical and Verbal Intervention Techniques class.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, extreme cold, and extreme heat. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
This position is one of prevention of crime against the Prince William County School system rather than investigation and apprehension; however, the security assistant will investigate school incidents by talking with students to determine specifics about what happened. The incumbent is responsible for safety and security of an assigned school. Responsibility is to include, but not limited to, patrolling parking lots, school entryways and hallways, and providing security of the premises to include protection of students, staff and property.
Positions are contingent upon sufficient student enrollment and program needs.
An essential function of this position is the ability to work in person and physically report for work at the school.
